Apache virtual host configured with a sym-link to a folder in my user directory fails with 403 Forbidden

I’m sure someone has asked/answered this before but my search hasn’t helped me much so… I have Eclipse IDE installed on my Linux box (LM13) with the ‘workspace’ folder located @ /home/user/projects/workspace I have Apache installed and set-up, working with various vhosts all of which have their folders somewhere under the web-root /var/www/… The problem I’m having is that the vhost I’ve configured for a project in my Eclipse Workspace can’t be accessed by Apache, […]

403 forbidden from apache2

I know this question gets asked a lot but none of the answers have solved my problem. I have the same configuration on my work computer but it’s not working at home! First I pulled from my git repository into ~/proto-spa. Then I installed apache2. I disabled the default site, and then I copied the /etc/apache2/sites-available/default verbatim and dumped it into /etc/apache2/sites-available/proto-spa. I changed it to point to /var/www/proto-spa. I changed directories to var/www and […]

403 Forbidden when trying to access Nginx

I’ve just got a new server and want to try some other things. Like Nginx instead of Apache. So, installed nginx, got the Welcome page, installed php5-fpm and download a WordPress to give a try. But, I still got a 403 Forbidden when I try to go to the address… Here is the conf file : server { listen 80; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/axiol.access.log; error_log /var/log/nginx/axiol.error.log error; root /usr/share/nginx/axiol; location ~ .php$ { fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+\.php)(.*)$; […]

Configure Apache 2 to specify the same error documents for both 403 (Forbidden) and 404 (Page Not Found) responses

I’d like to know how to configure Apache 2 to specify the same error documents for both 403 (Forbidden) and 404 (Page Not Found) responses. I assume there is a directive to add to httpd.conf, but not sure what it is. Most of the tutorials I see for doing this are based around .htaccess files, but I want to set this directive globally. Asked by juwiley Add in a block like: ErrorDocument 403 /40x.html ErrorDocument […]

Apache: Options +Indexes still results in 403 Forbidden or Apache Test Page

On a local dev server, I have an Apache conf for a website like so <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin no-reply@localhost ServerName sandbox.mysite.internal DocumentRoot /var/www/vhosts/sandbox/mysite ErrorLog logs/sandbox/mysite-error.log CustomLog logs/sandbox/mysite-access.log common </VirtualHost> If I visit the following address (there is no index.php or index.html) http://sandbox.mysite.internal I get the Apache CentOS test page If I visit a subdirectory like http://sandbox.mysite.internal/test/ I get a 403 Forbidden error. So I add the following .htaccess here: /var/www/vhosts/sandbox/mysite/test/.htaccess Content: Options +Indexes Now when […]

Tomcat Manager 403 Behind Nginx

This has been driving me crazy for a few days now. Either I’m doing something completely wrong, really silly, or a combination thereof. I am on Ubuntu 11.10. I ran the following commands: sudo apt-get install nginx sudo apt-get install tomcat7 tomcat7-admin The following is my tomcat-users.xml file: <?xml version=’1.0′ encoding=’utf-8′?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename=”admin” /> <role rolename=”manager” /> <user username=”admin” password=”secret” roles=”admin,manager” /> </tomcat-users> I set up the following nginx configuration: server { listen 80; […]

What’s causing these 403 errors for the DocumentRoot on my Apache setup?

I’m configuring Apache myself, and trying to force myself to (re-)learn the configuration process. It’s been a long time! Version is Apache/2.2.21 running on Amazon Linux I’m planning on running a few sites from this server. I’ve created: /home/ec2-user/sites /home/ec2-user/sites/www.domain.ca /home/ec2-user/logs The first two contain index.html files. In the process of my experimentation, I’ve set my tree to 777 without any success, and have changed ownership and groups for directories and files to apache (which […]

Custom 403 Error page not showing

I want to restrict access to certain folders (includes, xml and logs for example) and so I’ve given them 700 permissions, and all files within them 600 permissions. Firstly, is this the right approach to restrict access? I have a .htaccess file in my root that handles rewriting and error documents. There are two pages in the root – 403.php and 404.php – for 403 and 404 errors. And I have these rules added to […]
