SQL Server Installation: Is it 32 or 64 bit?

Recently I was performing an OS upgrade on one of our DB servers, moving from Server 2003 to Server 2008. The DBMS is SQL Server 2005. While reinstalling SQL on the new Windows installation, I went to another of our DB servers to verify a couple of settings. Now, I always thought this second server was Server 2003 x64 + SQL 2005 x64 (from what I’d been told), but I now have my doubts about […]

Configuring PHP on Solaris 10 64-bit

We are currently running PHP 5.2.13 on a Solaris 10 server. I need to enable some additional features so I went to run the configure script but I’m getting some errors. I did an ‘export CFLAGS=”-m64″‘ to make sure GCC compiled in 64-bit mode, but it looks like I don’t have a 64-bit version of libiconv.so. I’ve tried running the script with ‘–without-iconv’ but no dice. Here’s the end of my config.log: configure:20017: checking for […]

Custom VCL prevents varnish from starting

Operating System: CentOS 6 (x86_64) I have installed and configured varnish however it now is unable to start. # service varnish restart Stopping Varnish Cache: [FAILED] Starting Varnish Cache: [FAILED] I have narrowed this error down to the inclusion of another VCL file in /etc/varnish/default.vcl. I include the VCL like so: include “/etc/varnish/domains/playwithbits.vcl”; If I empty the contents of playwithbits.vcl then varnish is able to start, but as soon as I add contents it fails. […]

Why doesn’t my server doesn’t recognise more than 4GB RAM even with Physical Address Extensions?

Why doesn’t my server doesn’t recognise more than 4GB RAM even with Physical Address Extensions under Windows Server 2003 SP2? I thought PAE should enable the server to use more RAM than 4GB but having upgraded the machine so it has 7GB RAM, Windows only sees 4GB of it. The RAM modules are all recognised by the server administrator software (2 x 2GB, 2 x 1GB and 2 x 512MB). Is there anything I can […]

Is there a GUI alternative to Putty SSH for transferring files?

Or any gui ssh for amazon ec2 linux instance servers? I need to transfer files between two linux virtual servers and currently I have Putty (which amazon recommends). However I am new to the server/virtual world and have no experience with commands. I was looking for a gui for beginners like me so I can basically copy/paste or drag/drop folders into the server. So is there a friendly gui out there for this? I was […]
