On AWS do I have to open ports in an EC2 instance’s firewall as well as security group?

If I change my SSH port from 22 to 23453, I can no longer ssh in. In more detail, I’m using a Red Hat EC2 instance on Amazon Web Services. This is the second change I’ve on a fresh install (first change was to add a non-root user). I can ssh in fine using Git Bash and a local .ssh/config file, I edit the line in /etc/ssh/sshd_config that currently says #Port 23453 to say Port […]

How to use route 53 to create subdomains that reference specific URLs of an EC2 instance

I have an EC2 instance running Redmine and myPHPadmin at https://myElasticIP/redmine and https://myElasticIP/phpmyadmin. I have a domain name registered with namecheap: myDomain.us Using Route 53, I have customized the DNS of myDomain.us (through the namecheap interface) to use the delegate NS’s in Route 53, so going to myDomain.us will automatically reference myelasticIP instead. How do I get it so that going to redmine.myDomain.us references https://myElasticIP/redmine and myphpadmin.myDomain.us references https://myElasticIP/myphpadmin? (without using URL Frames or URL […]

Rails/Mongo across multiple different geo-regions

I have a system that by necessity requires physical presence in three or more different locations and I need advice on structuring in such a way that my database stays replicated in a timely manner without horrible latency. I’ve seen mysql access and replication be incredibly slow when the application server was trying to talk to a node that wasn’t physically collocated. In this case I am using mongodb. The stack is linux/passenger/ruby/rails/mongodb. The database […]

SSH error when connecting to EC2 – Unable to find .ssh directory

Im pretty new to SSH, Linux AND Amazon EC2, but from my understanding this should be very simple. What am I missing here? I am unable to connect to my EC2 instance I have a local machine running Fedora 15 with minimal modifications. I am connecting to an AWS EC2 instance through the terminal using a .pem file. I believe I have all settings configured properly on amazons interface: enabling neccessary permissions and setting up […]

Map EC2 Elastic IP to VPC Elastic IP

My DNS points to an EC2 Elastic IP and I want to start using a new VPC Elastic IP instead. Is it possible to route the EC2 Elastic IP to the new VPC Elastic IP within AWS such that when I update the DNS, the old IP will continue to work? Asked by Ian Warburton Nope. Unfortunately you can only map it to an instance. Answered by Jason Floyd Check more discussion of this question. […]

Can’t attach EC2 instance to Network Interface

When trying to attach a network interface, it says… No instances were found for this availability zone. My instance is in us-east-1c and my network interface is in us-east-1b. Is that significant? If so, how do I create the VPC in the same zone and if not then why this error? EDIT: I’ve re-created the VPC and the Network Interface is now us-east-1c and the EC2 instance is also us-east-1c. Same error message though! Asked […]

Assign multiple Elastic IPs to EC2 instance

When I try and associate a second Elastic IP to a small EC2 instance, the currently assigned Elastic IP is disassociated. Do I need to use a VPC? Asked by Ian Warburton Classic EC2 instances can only have a single Elastic IP address associated with them. To get multiple IP addresses, you must use VPC and setup multiple network interfaces on your instance. Answered by Matt Houser Check more discussion of this question. Bookmark on […]
