Since our SQL server is Standard edition and cannot do proactive caching, I was wondering if Integration Services can detect changes in a database/table, so it can then process the cube automatically? Or is this wishful thinking? I don’t believe that it will support this natively, but you could do some thing like the following 1) Add a trigger to the table that will set a last modified date value each time the a record [...]Continue Reading »
I’m trying to restore a cube backup (a .abf file) using SQL Server Management Studio, but I’m getting the error message: The following system error occurred: The file exists. . (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services) (yes, there really are two dots) Does anyone know how to resolve this so I can restore the backup? Here are the steps I’m using: Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Make the connection to the AS server Right-click [...]Continue Reading »
One of our SQL boxes ran itself out of disk space last night. This particular server has both the database engine and analysis services on it. Database engine was not happy about having no disk space on the volume where all the data files are, but analysis services just plain died. At least, the only thing I have to blame is the full volume. Has anyone experienced a SSAS that they’ve been able to directly [...]Continue Reading »
I have a single instance of SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services running on Windows Server 2008 x64 with 8GB of RAM on the server. All of the settings for memory are left to their defaults. When the SSAS service starts, it behaves normally. However, whenever a query is run against the instance, the SSAS service continually will consume all of the memory on the server, to the point that the server needs to be rebooted. I’m very new to AD LDS and experienced but not qualified with SSAS, so my apologies for my ignorances with these. We have a couple implementations where we expose SSAS via an HTTPS proxy (msmdpump.dll) and currently we have a temporary domain setup handling this (where our end-users have a second account+creds to manage because of this = non-ideal). I want to move us towards a more permanent solution which I’m thinking of moving all [...]Continue Reading »
I’ve seen tutorials articles and posts on how to build datawarehouses with star and snowflakes schemas, denormalization of OLTP databases fact and dimension tables and so on. Also seen comments like: Star schemas are for datamarts, at best. There is absolutely no way a true enterprise data warehouse could be represented in a star schema, or snowflake either. I want to create a database that will server for reporting services and maybe (if that isn’t [...]Continue Reading »

I’m trying to upgrade an evaluation instance of SQL Server 2008 to a fully licensed instance of SQL Server 2008 R2. I made it most of the way through the installer, but I’m getting stopped at the Upgrade Rules page – the SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check is failing. The specific error I get: Rule “SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check” failed. The current instance of the SQL Server Analysis [...]Continue Reading »
