Enable Dell PowerEdge 830 withoud CD Rom drive to boot unattended

I removed the cd rom drive from a Dell PowerEdge 830 Now it does not start unattended anymore. It boots normal, then halts at a line that says “strike F1 to continue, F2 to run setup”. F1 would work here but that`s not what I want. I searched the BIOS but there was no obvious solution. What to do to make it startup unattended again without inserting a cd rom drive or pressing F1? Asked […]

HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF won’t boot from USB drive

Can’t get an HP 8200 Elite Small Form Factor to boot from USB. It’s done so in the past & the USB boot drive works in a different machine (HP 8440p laptop). Have tried upgrading BIOS (from 2.09 to 2.15a, then back to 2.14a) with no luck. USB drive appears in BIOS “Device Configuration” list, but not in “Boot Order”. USB Hard Drive is set highest in the BIOS “Boot Order” list. What simple, obvious […]

Updating ALOM firmware Sun Fire v440

I have Sun Fire v440 server with old bios (or ALOM?) release. So the fans installed in the server make a lot of noise, even if processors aren’t heated. I have some image files to update bios (alombootfw (boot image file) and alommainfw (main image file)), but i found only one manual to update ALOM firmware from Solaris OS (now debian squeeze istalled). There is flashupdate [-s IPaddr -f pathname] command at SC> console, but […]

Grub 1.99 default?

I have been running into an issue. I have my grub set to run the only OS on power on, and the BIOS to automatically restart the machine if it dies. The issue is that if the machine dies (from say a power failure), when it is powered back on it still gets stuck on the GRUB loading screen. Is there any way to skip this screen no matter what and boot into the OS […]

Disable PCIe device on Dell R610

I have a Dell PowerEdge R610 system sitting in a co-location facility. It has four onboard NICs and a 2-port PCIe NIC in one of the slots. I’m usually working with HP servers, so I have the ability to enable/disable PCI devices in the BIOS to control device appearance during installations. Sometimes, I work around NIC enumeration issues this way (e.g. motherboard port 1 was actually eth2 for my CentOS installer). But in this case, […]

Enabling hardware virtualisation BIOS; anything to beware?

A lot of recent virtualisation tools can either make use of, or demand, BIOS support (Intel-VT, AMD-V, etc). But in most of the BIOS screens I’ve seen, it has been disabled by default – sometimes even with fairly non-subtle (but vague) warnings. So: is there any issue I should be aware of in enabling VT? I assume it is only used when triggered deliberately by software such as VMware or Virtual PC. But what is […]

Is it pronounced bi-Ahs or bi-Ohs

For as long as I’ve known, I and everyone I’ve encountered pronounces BIOS as bi-Ohs. Since listening to the Stackoverflow podcast I’m still surprised to hear Jeff say bi-Ahs. Just when I thought it was an Atwoodism, Michael Pryor made the same enunciation on episode 51. Right or wrong, how is it more commonly pronounced? I pronounce it bi-Ohs (bī’ōs) Check more discussion of this question. Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook […]

Bios settings for Dual Opteron Server + 32/64 bit Linux decision + how to use 2 LAMP machines

semi-n00b here. I’m setting up a server that will have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS with a LAMP setup. The system is dual Opteron 248s with 4GB memory. I had a few questions about settings in the bios: Will turning off (disable) some of the hardware from bios free up memory for the OS? So disabling the USB Host Controller, serial/parallel ports, floppy disk controller, pci device slots, etc. I have a setting for “CPU0,CPU1 Link Tx […]
