How is GRUB config is read before filesystem is mounted?

During Linux booting how is the contents of grub.conf read since the file system is not mounted yet? Asked by nitins Grub is able to read from your root file system all by itself. It is in essence a miniature operating system: it has driver code to talk to (some of) your hardware, and it has file system code to understand the layout of your filesystem. Take a look in /boot/grub. The *.mod files are […]

IBM Server takes a long time to boot past UEFI to OS

I have a pair of IBM System x3620 servers. These servers do fine once they finally reach the point where the operating system takes over, but it takes them forever to get past the new-fangled UEFI boot system… a good five minutes or so; maybe longer. I haven’t timed it, but it’s the kind of thing where you go get a cup of coffee while you wait and it’s still going when you come back. […]

Enable Dell PowerEdge 830 withoud CD Rom drive to boot unattended

I removed the cd rom drive from a Dell PowerEdge 830 Now it does not start unattended anymore. It boots normal, then halts at a line that says “strike F1 to continue, F2 to run setup”. F1 would work here but that`s not what I want. I searched the BIOS but there was no obvious solution. What to do to make it startup unattended again without inserting a cd rom drive or pressing F1? Asked […]

Boot.ini on Windows Server 2003 R2

I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 with 48 GB of RAM; server has been running strong for quite some time. Recently our boot.ini was modified causing issues, most likely by our remote administrators. Now the server is only showing 14 GB of RAM. This has caused major performance issues for our end users. Our remote administrators have stated “we don’t change the boot.ini settings(switches)”. However, I know for a fact that all of the […]

Server 2008 R2 boot is at 2 hours and counting. What now?

This morning, we rebooted our Server 2008 R2 box. No problem, came right back up. Then we shut it down and let it install windows updates. While it was off, we added some RAM. Then we turned it back on. The system came right back up to the “press ctrl-alt-delete” screen, so far, so good. I logged in. The system got as far as “Applying Group Policy” — then spent almost an hour applying drive […]

How to run unprivileged scripts from rc.local at system boot?

I’ve set up my /etc/rc.local to start some services using a couple of scripts to bring my system up on reboot. One script runs as root and starts nginx, mysql, php etc… and works fine. The other stuff runs as my regular user, so I’m doing a sudo and it doesn’t seem to work at boot time. Is there a problem running as unprivileges users at this stage of the boot process? My rc.local looks […]

Linux on a drive-boot-only machine

I have a blade server that was imaged prior to me getting my hands on it. It’s a hot swap four drive RAID, no CD. I’m trying to load Linux onto it (Ubuntu if it matters), but the BIOS doesn’t allow for usb boot, which I always use, and it doesn’t have a CD drive… My main thought it I should grab one of the hot swap drives, plug it into another linux box, save […]

Red Hat Kickstart: How do I get a DVD-ROM based install to work?

I’m trying to create a “Magic DVD” that will install and configure RHEL 6.2 just the way we want it the first time, every time. Here’s the process I’ve been trying to use, just to prove the concept: Perform the install manually as intended. Allow anaconda to create /root/anaconda-ks.cfg. Copy the contents of the RHEL install DVD to a directory on my hard drive. mkdir -p /home/derp/RHEL/diskFiles cp /media/RHEL_6.2\ i386\ Disc\ 1/* /home/derp/RHEL/diskFiles Move /root/anaconda-ks.cfg […]
