Bind9 minimal zone configuration seems not working

I have installed bind9 on debian squeeze. This is my named.conf.local file: options { directory “/var/cache/bind”; auth-nxdomain no; listen-on { any; }; listen-on-v6 { any; }; };zone “devhub.pl” IN { type master; file “db.devhub”; }; And this is my zone file: $TTL 3hdevhub.pl. Do /usr/local and /usr/local/bin need to be group-writable? If so, why?

While it’s possible that it’s a fluke of a package I installed or the VPS image, it appears that /usr/local and /usr/local/bin (both of which are owned by root:staff) are group-writable by default on Debian Squeeze. Is there a reason that they need to be? Asked by Isaac it appears that /usr/local and /usr/local/bin (both of which are owned by root:staff) are group-writable by default on Debian Squeeze. This is, at present, by design, you […]

How to fix ‘File name too long’ error in apache2?

I see a lot of ‘File name too long’ errors in apache error log on Debian. How can I fix this? Asked by alfish This is a known bug and or known problem. This could be the bug: https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=45187 Or your file name might actually be too long, in that case, make sure your file-names (or anything between 2 slashes) is not longer then 255 characters. Also, make sure to revise any mod_rewrite-rules you have, […]

Samba permissions for copied files

I have Samba running on a plug computer running Debian Squeeze which I’m trying to configure to act as a web-based file server. The machine runs Lighttpd for the web server, and Samba for the file sharing. The user is able to use Samba to copy files from their local machine onto the plug computer using Samba, and then view them through the web browser (script I wrote). Lighttpd runs as www-data, Samba runs as […]

manually rotating logfile with rsyslogd

I want to force logfile rotation using logrotate -f /var/log/syslog, but it’s only return tones of: error: syslog:1 unknown option ‘May’ — ignoring line error: syslog:1 unexpected text I know that on this system rsyslogd is running. How to rotate /var/log/syslog? I want it empty. Asked by kbec You don’t tell logrotate which file to rotate on the command line. You pass it a configuration file. So in your case, logrotate is reading /var/log/syslog and […]

Installed Jenkins on a Debian Server and unable to connect on any port

I installed Jenkins on a Debian server and everything seems to have worked fine. It says Jenkins is running and I am able to start and stop it using (/etc/init.d/jenkins start). However I am unable to pull it up on a browser using any port for example 8080 or some other port as it says unable to connect. What can I do to trouble shoot this further? I was thinking that the port may have […]
