Rebooting a DFS Server
Server A and B have DFS-R. If I want to reboot Server B and all clients connect to server A, do I need to disable folder targets for Server B still? Asked by Markaway For a REBOOT? No, just reboot it. You may get small outages if they are the only targets – otherwise clients fall over – but you can do that ona weekend or evening. Is there a way to monitor the DFSR backlog in a manner more efficient than using dfsrdiag.exe backlog? I wrote a program that just slurps in the backlog count via dfsrdiag.exe backlog /smem:alpha /rmem:beta /rgname:domain\namespace\foldername /rfname:foldername with five minute intervals. Each time it runs, it takes quite a while (between 2 to 5 minutes) to get the resulting value. That means that in the end, it runs for a few minutes to collect the info [...]

I was wondering what alternatives to DFS-R are out there on windows machines for real-time bidirectional file & folder replication? DFS-R requires active directory and a domain controller which I don’t want utilize in this particular environment. Thanks! Tom Asked by Tom Frey I’m using Software Pursuits SureSync to keep a production and standby spare file server hosting roughly 2TB of data in sync at one Customer site. I’m using it in a unidirectional capacity [...]

Question: Is there a way to make this 350,000 file backlog complete faster? For nearly every file the only change was a change to the ACL for each affected file. Some files have changed content, but that is not the common case in this situation. This might be fixed. I’ll edit this text to confirm success/fail after a period of time and verification. Toward the end of this question text I have detailed the changes [...]

I have two domain controllers both server 2008, and the domain function level has been raised to 2008. We migrated from a single dc running server 2008 previously. If I run : dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:win2k8dc1 >c:dcdiag.txt I receive the following error: Starting test: VerifyEnterpriseReferences The following problems were found while verifying various important DN references. Note, that these problems can be reported because of latency in replication. So follow up to resolve [...]

When we migrate our production DCs to Server 2008 I would also like to move away from FSR to DFS-R for SYSVOL replication. My problem is that I setup a quick lab to test it out but it’s not going as planned. I’m sure I’m just overlooking something obvious but I can’t seem to figure out what Here’s what I’m doing 1. Installed two server 2008 machines (R2) and promoted them to domain controllers – [...]

I maintain two Win 2003 servers connected via a VPN with data duplicated via DFS. As it stands the customer is complaining of losing data – normally because one person in each office saves a version of the file, causing one copy to silently go to the conflicts folder. The ideal would be to lock access to a file at both locations, or at least notify users if their changes have ended up in the [...]

I’m configuring two server as IIS web servers on Windows Server 2008 in load balancing mode. I want to enable DFS replication for synchronizing web content files and IIS configuration data (via IIS 7 shared configuration.) The servers are not in a Windows domain. After I addded the DFS role, I’m getting the following error message in the event log: The DFS Replication service failed to contact domain controller to access configuration information. Replication is [...]

We’re currently using DFSR in Server 2008 to replicate from our head office to 3 branch offices across VPN links. This way we have a local copy of all the companies files in each site, for quick access and fault tolerance. We decided against WAN Accelerators and centralised files for cost and speed reasons. However, DFSR isn’t cutting it for us. Since we have 100′s of files open at once at the hub site, DFSR [...]

We have a small stub office that currently has a single server 2003 domain controller, and a DFS-R copy of the file store held at our main office. We probably replicate about 100Gb of data, I would guess about 20Gb maximum is actively used at both ends. We have (relatively) slow ADSL links between sites. Replication mostly works quite well for us, except on instances where we make changes to security on some of the [...]
