Linux data storage and partitioning
In the following output of df -h you can see that i have added a new hard drive(/dev/hdd1) and have mounted as /hdd1. My question is if I start dumping data to /opt will that data be mounted in /hdd1 or / My goal is to utilise the new hdd1 instead of old disk(/dev/sda3). How can this be done? Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 442G 312G 12G 86% / tmpfs 1.9G 0 [...]

I have a failed drive that is reported in HP Diagnostics https://localhost:2381/hpdiags/frontend2/frontend.php? It tells me that Logical Drive 5 has a drive that is about to fail. The name of that hard drive (according to HP Diag) is Hard Drive 36. I click “Start Drive Identity LED” and the drive and see Drive #1 of my MSA2000 blinking. I then launch the Array Configuration Utility, and after clicking on all my SAS arrays (and clicking [...]
Continue Reading »RAID: Two key concepts if anyone could clear them up?
I had a quick question about RAID. I understand that RAID uses one or more parity disks to repair failed disks, but I was wondering what they mean by “declustering” the disks? And also, if someone could explain the concept of “scrubbing” when it comes to disks and such (in a way that a beginner could understand) that would really be helpful Declustering uses multiple RAID controllers in a way that a failed disk can [...]

After resizing a C: partition I’m left with two blocks of “unallocated space”. However despite the fact that neither of these blocks is a partition (they’re just blank space) Windows sees them as separate blocks. I cannot see any way to combine them or to create a new partition which spans both blocks of free space. See screenshot: I think that one unallocated space is in Extended Partition and the last one is out of [...]

Obviously there’s an infinite variety of ways of carving up your raw SAN LUNs to provide VM boot and data vDisks – but what methods do you use, what are their pros/cons, and are there any good ‘best-practice’ docs you’ve come across (other then the very generic VMWare ones I mean). Thanks in advance. Where I work we have been presenting the ESX servers fiber attached LUN’s which are 500GB in size. Due to SCSI [...]
Continue Reading »Using a VHD as a data storage location?
I asked previously if there are good reasons to partition disks on Windows, and one of the big ones was for splitting data and OS. So that should you reinstall, you do not need to worry about the data (i.e. the partition with the OS gets wiped, while the data one remains). Windows 7 allows you to have a VHD (virtual hard drive) file as a drive in the OS natively. My thinking is that [...]

I think this is one area that is a pain for every sysadmin. Users don’t really know how much storage space they are using, and don’t take the time to manage what is stored there, or how long it stays around. What policies does your company implement to keep networked disk space under control? This is one of those areas where my views are contrary to the mainstream. We do not have disk quotas, in [...]
Continue Reading »How Does Windows Number its Disks? Mine keep switching
How does Windows number its disks? By numbering, I mean the physical disks, which Disk Management calls Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2, etc. My C and D partition used to be on Disk 0 and my E partition was on Disk 1. Now, however, my C and D paritions are Disk 1 and E is on Disk 0. I have a backup product which backs up based on the disk numbering, so when this [...]

does someone faced error “The RPC server is unavailable” during connecting to Disk management MMC console to Hyper-V Server R2? Servers are in the same AD domain and MMC console is enabled on Hyper-V. Thanks You need to change the Firewall rules on both machines (NOT only the Hyper-V Server) Run this command on both machines: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”Remote Volume Management” new enable=yes Check more discussion of this question. Continue Reading »From SuperUser: Volume on spare drive marked as system partition
I asked this question on SuperUser a few days ago but haven’t gotten any responses yet. I figured I would try my luck here since a) there isn’t much of a difference between disk manager in Vista and Server 08 and b) it’s backup related and I suppose could fall into a server problem should anyone run into this when performing backups on a server with the same (albeit bad) configuration. Also, I haven’t been [...]
