GNS3 Connection to real network
I have this topology in GNS3 Project on Windows 7: PC (C5) is managed by vpcs as described in this tutorial: http://www.gns3.net/gns3-hosts-topologies/. R1-R3 – emulations of Cisco 7200 routers. Cloud is connected to router by NIO MS loopback adapter (my real PC) as described in this tutorial: http://www.gns3.net/gns3-connecting-real-networks/. Device IP configuration: C1: ip – 9.9.9.9Mask – 255.255.255.0Default Gateway – 9.9.9.7 R1 e1/1: ip – 9.9.9.7Mask – 255.255.255.0 R1 e1/0: ip – 9.9.8.1Mask – 255.255.255.0 R2 [...]

I have a open relationship with Linux, i use it on and off and i just got into the latest ubuntu and got a change to try out wine and it seemed to take any windows app and make it like i was actually using windows. I wanted to know is wine that stable to use in production/businesses or are there problems that i haven’t come across yet? Wine v1 is considered stable. “Stable” is [...]

… like running a PPC or ARM system on x86 hardware. As far as I know: VMWare can’t QEMU can KVM can because it uses QEMU Is this correct? What other solutions are there? That’s not virtualisation, that’s emulation. Virtualisation can be seen as a specific kind of emulation where you emulate the same machine on itself, accelerating the emulation by letting some of the instructions run for real. Your question should just be “What [...]

In VMWare you can use multiple CPU, but only as much as present on the host. Is there a way to use more CPU than physically available ? It would be to : test software designed to run on an expensive 16-way box on commodity 2-way boxes. Use an image designed for 2-way on a 1-way host test software on not-power-of-2-way (think 3) (Although this could eventually be done on a 4-way box) In VMWare [...]

I’m working on software that needs to communicate with hardware over RS232 interfaces. In order to test I’m currently using 2 USB-TO-SERIAL devices connected to eachother using an RS232 cable. (Of course both USB devices are connected to the same computer). While it’s perfectly possible to test this way, I’m wondering if there is no way to create 2 virtual com ports on my system and connect them to eachother. I’m using Windows 7 RC1 [...]

With the new Exchange boxes going in, I’d like to do some thorough testing on smartphone features, as well as being able to provide salesman-proof documentation (I’m a dreamer). We’ve got drastic smartphone-creep, and people have been allowed to expect connectivity on everything from iPhones to Q’s to Blackberries. (thanks, boss!) Rants aside, has anyone else out there been cursed with supporting every smartphone on the planet, and are there good emulators out there to [...]

I just set up Microemulator on OS X (Leopard) and am running Opera Mini 4.2, hoping to test a mobile website I’m developing. Opera Mini can hit public websites, but it can’t to hit my test sites on OS X’s Apache instance. I’ve tried: localhost/~myUserName/site (times out) myIpAddress/~myUserName/site (times out) myMachineName/~myUserName/site (“Address not available from this machine”) All of the above work for any OS X desktop browsers and for Windows VMs that I test [...]
Continue Reading »Is it possible to emulate hardware using a virtualization solution?
I know I can use VMWare or Hyper-V to run emulated versions of operating systems, and I have a fair amount of control over some of the hardware aspects. What I would like to know is, how is it possible to have more control over the hardware emulation. For example. I can adjust the amount of system ram using the above mentioned solutions, but how can I adjust for example the CPU. My dev machine [...]

I’m looking for a way to run HP-UX (for educational purposes), but I don’t have HP hardware right now. These options are not very suitable for me: HP TestDrive program – Looks like it was discontinued 2 years ago. Ski – looks like only CPU emulator. Is it worth trying? HPPAQEMU – Patch for old Qemu for HPPA-Linux guest-OS only. Is it worth trying? hp-ux Aires – I don’t need to visualize HP-PA on HP-Itanium. [...]

I am trying to reproduce a network-related performance problem from a remote site to a cloud-hosted system I’m responsible for. They get awful performance from their location, I get fine performance from mine. I have a hardware WAN emulator (Apposite Linktropy Mini2 in this case) I can use to try to simulate their network to reproduce the problem. But first, I need to know the performance characteristics of the network between them and the server. [...]
