What does “link to unknown” mean?
I just upgraded my server to Fedora 17 which made a switch of my bootloader from GRUB Legacy to GRUB2. There are two symbolic links in the /etc folder that points to the files grub.conf and grub.cfg in /boot/grub and /boot/grub2 respectively. Though the targets seem correct, the link icons are displaying an X status which seems to indicate that the links are broken. Upon right-clicking the property type, it states “link to unknown”. The [...]

So, currently on a server I have a Fedora VM for an end user who remotes in. Unannounced to me, it was overfilled with data, and now has no more disk space. At this point, it crashed about a minute after booting up. I went into the VM and allocated more space, but it hasn’t recognized this yet. So my question is: Is there a way to have the new volume partitioned and added on [...]

Would there be any technical differences if I installed Java from an RPM versus just running the available binary? I am running on CentOs 6.3 and Java is 1.7 Asked by BestPractices Depends what you mean by “technical differences” and “just running the available binary” but, no, there is no difference to running the bundled RPM version of the JRE/JKD from the exact same JRE/JDK, from the same manufacturer, for the same version, for the [...]

We manufacture a linux appliance for data centers, and all are running fedora installed from the same kickstart process. There are different hardware versions, some with IDE hard drives and some SCSI, so the filesystems may be at /dev/sdaN or /dev/hdaN. We have a web interface into these appliances that show disk usage, which is generated using “df | grep /dev/*da”. This generally works for both hardware versions, giving an output like follows: /dev/sda2 5952284 [...]

From what I understand, the noarch suffix means that it’s architecture independent and should work universally. If this is the case, why should I install architecture-specific packages at all? Why not just go straight for the noarch? Are there optimizations in the x86 or x64 binaries that aren’t found in the noarch binaries? What’s best for high performance applications? Folding@Home does this with their controller: Asked by Aaron In this case the noarch “binary” is [...]
