Get Folder Size on Linux

I have a lot of home folders under /home/ and I would like to get the total size of each users folder in an easy to read list. ie /home/user1 100MB /home/user2 24MB /home/user3 54MB etc. Currently using something similar to du -hc | grep total IMO, a merge of the answers by Ernie and Depesz is closest to what you asked for, except that it should be ‘du -s /home/*/ | sort -n’. ‘du […]

I am doing quite a bit of work at the command line and recently started having to do it on a Windows 2003 box. I can’t figure out how to add a Command Prompt Here to a folder context menu. And googling usually brings back methods for doing this in other OSes. Any ideas? You can install the XP Powertoy, or just add this to your registry Create these 2 keys: HKCRDirectoryshellOpen Command Prompt Here […]

Moving Group Policy Folder Redirection root path

I have all my users on my domain enabled for Folder Redirection and they all point to the same root path (Basic Redirection). Here are the settings. I want to move only a subset of those users out to a subfolder of the root path such that i can apply different security permissions on said subfolder (and have them propagate into the users MyDocs folders). I have the user subset in another AD container so […]

Mount Remote CIFS/SMB Share as a Folder not a Drive Letter

Is there any way to mount a remote CIFS/SMB/SAMBA share as a folder/directory and not as a drive letter. For example, I want this map: \ServerShareName -> C:FolderShareName Instead of the usual map like this: \ServerShareName -> Z: The server is Linux/Samba and the client is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The closest I’ve found is being able to mount a local volume as a subfolder using the Windows disk manager, but it doesn’t appear to […]

User unable to delete folder / files “File in use by another user” Server 2003

I am administering a standalone Windows 2003 Terminal Server with no domain membership. Occasionally (about once a week or so) a user will attempt to delete a sub-folder in a Shared folder and gets denied with “File in use by another user”. I tried checking the shared folder snap-in and that folder is not open. She has full control and is the owner of the folder as well. I even checked in “Effective permissions” for […]

Migrating a NAS while keeping the files and their rights intact?

Right, what we wish (or need) to do is to migrate a NAS from a old machine to a new one. problem is, we wish to keep the folder hierarchie intact, and all the settings and shares. Now I vaguely recall microsoft used to have a tool to do exactly this. It would copy the folders exactly, with the rights intact, and then remove the shares on the old machine and reactivate them on the […]

Folder shared over internet by multiple users

We would like to setup a folder on a server where we would keep our documents. This folder would be mapped to windows like a network drive where users can copy/paste documents. Thing is, this folder would not be on local network, it would be on a server which is accessible over internet. We don’t want dropbox or something like that… We were thinking of webdav, but we were wondering if there is something better? […]

how to restore a mysql dump FOLDER

After having a vps crash, I asked my hosting to give me the dumped file of my drupal database. It is a folder filled with of *.frm *.MYD files of the database tables. I used to restore mydb.sql files thru command line (mysqldupm …) but I have no idea how I can restore the current folder. Your help is much appreciated. The best thing you could do would be to ask them to run mysqldump […]

Active Directory Folder Effective Permissions of all users

I know that is easy to get the effective permissions of one group or user over a folder, but I want to know if it is possible to get the effective permissions for all users on my shared folder. There is any tool to do that? The built-in GUI dialog for Security in Explorer will show all explicit and inherited permissions on a file or directory. If a user isn’t listed, either by name or […]
