Online resize logicaldrive on Smart Array P410i

On my HP Proliant server I have hot added 2 extra drives. To expand the current raid 1 array I used the following commands: hpacucli ctrl slot=0 logicaldrive 1 modify raid=1+0 hpacucli ctrl slot=0 ld 1 add drives=allunassigned Now the logicaldrive looks like this: # hpacucli ctrl slot=0 logicaldrive 1 showSmart Array P410i in Slot 0 (Embedded)array A Logical Drive: 1 Size: 136.7 GB Fault Tolerance: RAID 1+0 Heads: 255 Sectors Per Track: 32 Cylinders: […]

Two raid controllers in one HP ML350 G4 server

Here’s the situation: I have running HP Proliant ML 350 G4 server, which already has Adaptec AAC-RAID controller and 2 HDD built as Raid-1. Now, I want to add another 2 HDD but for them I have another controller (FastTrak TX2200). I connected the controller to the PCI slot and wired new HDDs. Then using FastTrak raid controller menu I created a new Raid and it shows me as one logical disk. However, my Ubuntu […]

moving raid 10 to another identical server both on Smart Array 6i controllers

I have dead HP DL 380G4 with RAID 1+0 with 1 logical volume from 4x72GB drives on built-in Smart Array 6i 128Mb BBWC. It was shut down properly. It seems it was usual death for Proliant with ILO led 2,3,8 lighting. I want to move array to another identical server with same raid firmware level. What is the best strategy?: I have RAID 1+0 on bay 0 bay 1 bay 2 bay 3 As I […]

Zero-channel RAID for High Performance MySQL Server (IBM ServeRAID 8k) : Any Experience/Recommendation?

We are getting this IBM rack mount server and it has this IBM ServeRAID8k storage controller with Zero-Channel RAID and 256MB battery backed cache. It can support RAID 10 which we need for our high performance MySQL server which will have 4 x 15000K RPM 300GB SAS HDD. This is mission-critical and we want as much bandwidth and performance. Is this a good card or should we replace with another IBM RAID card? IBM ServeRAID […]

Poweredge R710 configuring RAID 10 with one disk missing

I have ordered Poweredge R710 server with 4 diskas planning to configure them as RAID10. However I only got 3 disks delivered (4th will be delivered in 10 days). I am wondering can I create RAID10 array with one disk missing and start installing my system (aware of possible risks in case the disk dies), and then when the disk arrives I just add it to the system? Will RAID BIOS let me do this? […]

Possible to migrate RAID 10 system from 2TB Seagate to 2TB WD?

A couple of our servers have ST32000641AS (2TB Seagate desktop drives) in RAID 10 using an Adaptec 2405 controller. I’ve been told by Adaptec that this is a bad idea and we have, in fact, already seen one raid system go down using these drives. Since this is a 24/7 system, my question is whether it would be possible to switch over to WD RE4 2TB raid edition drives (model WD2003FYYS) by hot swapping them, […]

Dell 2950 – Can I mix SSD with spindle HDDs?

I have a Dell 2950 with a Perc 5/i controller inside it. I don’t want to spark a debate about drive types and which is “better” etc etc. Just simply; I would like to put in 2x Cheetah 15.5k SAS drives and mirror them for the OS. I would also like to put in 2x SSDs (exact model is still being debated) and mirror those for the data. Can the Perc 5/i manage multiple RAID […]

Ubuntu Server: Partitioning large hardware raids

I am trying to set up a storage server which has a hardware raid controller and 15×3 TB harddrives. This server is a dedicated server from hetzner.de and I am using the default setup routine (installing an preconfigured image) for setup. The tool for installing the images does not allow partitions with more than 2TB, so I configured it as followed: 100GB / 512MB /boot 32GB swap My plan was to create another partition when […]

Replace a 3.5″ hard drive in a RAID 5 array with an SSD?

With a 3ware 9650SE on Debian 6, can I replace a drive in a RAID 5 array with an SSD? The goal would be to eventually replace each 3.5″ hard drive in the array with SSDs. Is there anything I should know about attempting something like this? Any background info? Asked by harmonic The drive has to be of equal or larger capacity than the drive it’s replacing, which is still difficult (read: expensive) to […]

Monitor LSI 3ware raid controller on ESXi

This concerns a server that runs ESXi (v. 4.x or 5.x) installed on drives that are configured into a raid10 using an LSI 3ware 97050 raid controller. I would like to know if there is a way to monitor the LSI 3ware series of controllers, in particular the 9750, through ESXi. And to hopefully also run the monitoring daemon LSI provides. I know you can set up a cronjob to execute tw_cli through ssh on […]
