What hosted server configuration do I need to consider for a medium-performance web-application?

I have a Microsoft ASP.NET MVC web application with SQL Server 2008. Currently running on a single server, performance is reasonable. However I now need to deploy the same application to support much higher volumes. There are also a number of high-load services (for real-time route scheduling and processing of data feeds). I believe that I will need a separate database server and one or two web-servers. If I host at somewhere like 1&1 or […]

Should HA hardware be in separate cabinets?

I want to host (co-located) a service at a Pier1, Q9 or some similar hosting facility. Is it best practice to put my failover hardware in separate cabinets, and in your experience, will the hosting provider allow this? My concern is that if something happens, say catches fire in the cabinet or a disgruntled rack renter pours his coke into the servers, both my HA stacks will be compromised. In your experience, if I put […]

Tinydns create a seperate A-Record for “www” and for my root domain

I am having issues understanding how I should adapting the following configuration for tinydns so that the A-Records for “www” and for my root domain. “www” pointing to 199.34.228.100. root domain pointing to 199.34.228.100. This would leave the current mails and only pointing the web to this new ip address. “mail.test.com” is our separate mail server. Current config: # NS and SOA records .test.co.uk::a.ns.bytemark.co.uk .test.co.uk::b.ns.bytemark.co.uk .test.co.uk::c.ns.bytemark.co.uk# MX record – mail server @test.co.uk::mail.test.com:10# PTR records +test.co.uk:80.68.48.137 […]

How to verify promised uptime before hiring a server?

I’ve been bitten by this too many times. You find a well known hosting provider, read comparative reviews (and pass by on any company that has influence in those review), they promise 99.99% uptime, you pay a reasonable price (not the cheapest) and after you bought the server or VPS, they end up delivering less than 95% uptime. I’m not naming any names, but these are some well-known companies. How can you independantly verify the […]

Server4You vserver outage 2012-11-26 [closed]

There was a major outage today (Nov 26, 2012) at Server4You’s Strassburg data center. My vserver was down for 8 solid hours. I’ve read their related terms and conditions and they provide the service as-is, ie no guarantee at all. That means I get what I get, no place for complaint. However I’d be curious what is the proper behavior in this case? Is this outage acceptable because of the low price? Would you consider […]

DNS NS and domain clarification

I am really trying to get my home web server up and I don’t seem to be succeeding. My web server withing my host system is running my web application and is viewable at the current isp ip 88.89.190.171 over WAN indicating that the webapp is fine and that router ports are forwarded. I have set up a DNS on this system with a single name server in the network and I manage to ping […]

Is it possible to have multiple ‘s in a vhost.conf?

My webserver is running Plesk and for each new site a vhost.conf file is created that has some include_path and open_basedir settings in it: <Directory /var/www/vhosts/website.nl/httpdocs> php_admin_value open_basedir “/usr/share/pear:/var/www/vhosts/global.website.nl/httpdocs/global:/tmp:/var/www/vhosts/website.nl/httpdocs” php_value include_path “/usr/share/pear:/var/www/vhosts/global.website.nl/httpdocs/global” </Directory> Is it possible to add another for this site and have the include_path and open_basedir setting change for a subdirectory like this: <Directory /var/www/vhosts/website.nl/httpdocs/subdirectory> php_admin_value open_basedir “/usr/share/pear:/var/www/vhosts/global.website.nl/httpdocs/global2:/tmp:/var/www/vhosts/website.nl/httpdocs/subdirectory” php_value include_path “/usr/share/pear:/var/www/vhosts/global.website.nl/httpdocs/global2″ </Directory> Asked by tvgemert If you meant …/domain.com/conf/vhost.conf file – these files […]

How would I put together a site requiring several TB? [closed]

Lets say I have a site with unmetered 100MBPS bandwidth (i assume its bits?) and the ram i require. Most plans i see offer HDD that hold 250gb and 1TB. But what happens if i compile/generate enough data that i require 10tb or 25tb? (I’d likely have two servers but…) I wouldn’t be serving all of that data (well not to the public) so CDN wouldn’t make sense. What do i do in this scenario? […]
