Active Directory: Viewing “Attribute Editor” after finding an account via ADUC’s “Find” option

When I activate the Advanced features (View -> Advanced Features) and open a user’s properties by navigating to their OU and right clicking the user object, I see the Attribute Editor tab. However, if I search for a user (right click the domain -> Find -> search for the user), and double click on the user, I do not see the tab. I cannot normally navigate to users because some OUs have too many users. […]

Hyper-V Manager: right-clicking on remote VM crashes MMC snap-in

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 machine that I log into and use to manage virtual machines running on multiple Hyper-V servers on our domain. Sometimes, when I right-click on a remote VM, the Hyper-V Manager will crash and display the following error message: If I use the Actions menu on the lower right, it works just fine, but for some reason right-clicking causes MMC to stop working. Is there any way […]

Security of remote management through MMC and other microsoft tools

When you connect to a server through an MMC console on a local computer (dsa.msc for example), what ports does the connection occur on? Is there any kind of protection from a rogue station hijaking the connection? If I use Computer Management and connect to another computer, it’s using microsoft-ds, which is port 445. Since there’s a lot of traffic in a Microsoft network traveling over 445, I’m pretty certain that they do good things […]

Allow traffic from single IP address, block all other addresses

I have a server running Windows Server 2003. I want to only allow traffic from my IP address and block all other traffic from all other addresses. I’d like to know how to correctly configure this IP Security Policy using the MMC within Windows. Best place to start is at the Microsoft TechNet IPsec page. It’s fairly simple to set up a local IPsec policy that will accept packets from a single address only. I […]

Remote Desktops on Vista/Win7 x64?

Is the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Administration Tools Pack the only way to install the Remote Desktops MMC add-in on Vista/Win7 x64 workstations? Are there any better, low cost alternatives? the problem is the RD MMC add-in uses the /console switch for console connections, this has been superseded by /admin in later versions of windows though, so it doesn’t really work any more I’ve been successfully using RD Tabs, and a commercial product […]

Why aren’t “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security/Connection security rules” and netsh in sync?

The screenshot pretty much says it all: I don’t understand. If I create rules in the MMC snap-in, they don’t appear in netsh, if I create rules in netsh, they don’t appear in the MMC snap-in. What am I missing here? (Note: this is Windows 7) Finally, I found out. My mistake is that I was using the Local Security Policy console to modify the firewall settings. A more direct approach is to use the […]
