EBS+RAID10+XFS slower than EBS+RAID10+EXT3 using MySQL?

We’re currently using EC2 with 16 EBS volumes in RAID10 configuration for our MySQL data. I know some people don’t recommend to put EBS volumes to RAID but that’s not what I’m concerned about at the moment. Current format is ext3, but we’re experimenting with moving to xfs, given many reports that it is faster. However, we’re actually experiencing a performance degradation when the partition was converted to xfs – a benchmark run with inserts, […]

Configure Postfix with Virtual Mailboxes to forward to a script

I am using the Postfix MTA with a virtual configuration from MySQL for the Users and Forwardings. Now I want some Adresses (that are dynamicaly generated, for writing via E-Mail to a Forum) to be forwarded to a php-script. I already have tried to put the script quoted and piped as destination bit it doesn’t work. “|php -q /path/to/script.php” But if I send a mail to that domain it says: User “|php -q /path/to/script.php”@mydomain.tld not […]

Wildcard backup MySQL databases

There are quite a few discussion on the Interweb on how to backup based on the wildcard table name, but how about wildcard database name? e.g. If I have databases named foo1 foo2 foo3 . . fooN bar1 I want to only backup db with name prefixed foo, is it possible? Asked by Yoga You select database names from tables table in information_schema database. you can use filter to filter by your prefix. the use […]

After creating a mysql user with all privileges, the user cannot create databases in phpMyAdmin and only sees information_schema table

This is a recurring problem for some reason… Using mysql 5.5, I am simply trying to create a user that can connect to the database remotely, have access to all databases, and create databases. I have created a user using: create user ‘dev’@’%’ identified by ‘abcdefg'; then granted all permissions using: GRANT ALL ON *.* to ‘dev’@’192.168.%’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘abcdefg’ WITH GRANT OPTION; and the result is that the user cannot create databases, and can […]

Count large file downloads from apache logs in mysql

I want to count file downloads for about 10 different files that a client has asked for. We’ve generated a separate log format for the apache logs that can be loaded into a MySQL database. For such a specific query I was hoping to be able to write a SQL statement to count the downloads rather than installing an over-bloated log analyser. This is the log format used for the MySQL logs: LogFormat “\”%a\”,%{%Y%m%d%H%M%S}t,%>s,\”%b\”,\”%{Content-Type}o\”, \”%U\”,\”%{Referer}i\”,\”%{User-Agent}i\”” […]

MysqlTunner and query_cache_size dilemma

On a busy mysql server MySQLTuner 1.2.0 always recommends to add query_cache_size no matter how I increase the value (I tried up to 512MB). On the other hand it warns that : Increasing the query_cache size over 128M may reduce performance Here are the last results: >> MySQLTuner 1.2.0 – Major Hayden <major@mhtx.net> >> Bug reports, feature requests, and downloads at http://mysqltuner.com/ >> Run with ‘–help’ for additional options and output filtering——– General Statistics ————————————————– […]

Install php-fpm + php-mysql + MariaDB on Centos from repos

I try to take CentOS 6.4 x64 and install nginx w/ php-fpm on it (and that’s easy part, no problem at all), then add php-mysql package and MariaDB as a mysql drop-in replacement. And here I face the hang… I’ve added epel, nginx and remi repos, add priority=10 line to its .repo files, and now as I install MariaDB-server the dependency also brings me MariaDB’s “common” package. Then, as I try to install php-mysql, I […]

Added an index to my MySQL database, now queries get locked

I just added another index to a table in my database but now the site is crashing, queries get locked and not unlocked and queries are not executed (I can see them in the process list and they usually take less than a second to execute but now they are at around 600 seconds and more etc.). I didn’t change anything on my site, just added an index. How is this possible, did anybody had […]

Do MySQL transaction logs grow out of hand?

I used to manage Microsoft SQL Server installations. Now I’m up against a MySQL 5.1 server. On MSSQL, I remember databases have transaction log files which grow larger and larger as transactions occur. If you don’t truncate the files every now and then, you will eventually run out of disk space. So even if you compact your databases by deleting old rows, disk space will be running out. I wonder if MySQL behaves similarly and […]
