Samba share is on Ubuntu 8.04 Samba config is below: # Name mangling options ; preserve case = yes ; short preserve case = yes# Most people will find that this option gives better performance. # See smb.conf(5) and /usr/share/doc/samba-doc/htmldocs/speed.html # for details # You may want to add the following on a Linux system: # SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 socket options = TCP_NODELAY#======================= Share Definitions =======================[public] comment = Public Directory path = /home/public # inherit permissions […]

Is it possible to provide access to a domain resource to a non-domain user?

After a security review, I’m splitting the tiers of a Windows 2008 Server application that is currently on a single machine in the corporate domain. I want to move the IIS 7 Web UI to a new machine in the domain so users can authenticate against it using their AD accounts and leave the rest (the application tier and database server) on the current machine but moved off the domain behind a firewall. The app […]

Access a Network drive from another user from CMD (windows)

I have written PostgreSQL backups scripts that backup all the databases to file. pgAgent.exe (a scheduling daemon) starts the BAT scripts under the local postgres user. The normal setup is to backup to a local drive and get the backup program to pick up the files but we have a client that would like to backup to a network drive. I tried running pgAgent and by extension the scripts under the administration user and still […]

Apache UNC network path under Windows?

Ok, so I’m running apache on two Windows 7 boxes for use as a test environment. The idea is to keep all projects on a shared network path so I can access it with my desktop or notebook anytime. Running apache as a console using my user account, MyAccount, with access to the network path gives the following error: Warning: DocumentRoot [C:/EMMA/users/*MyAccount*/Documents/*MyWebsite*/] does not exist All I’ve done is included the httpd-vhosts.conf file in httpd.conf […]

Prevent owner to change permissions on network share

we have a Sun Storage Appliance (7110) with a SMB/CIFS share configured. It is joined to our Active Directory. What I am trying to accomplish is: ordinary Domain Users (builtin AD-group) should have access on the drive with rights to modify files and folders but don’t change permissions (because a user could lock out everyone else from a folder including administrators). Users in the AD-group “Storage_Admins” should have full control on the drive. There are […]

How to view files on a computer on a different network

We currently have 2 in-office networks coming in with different routers and IPs for each. What I am trying to do is to configure a one server from each network to connect to each other and be able to browse folders on a drive. The first server has an IP range of 68.x.x.x while the second server has an IP range of 173.x.x.x. What I am looking to do is to get on the 68 […]

Configure router/gateway on Ubuntu issue: unable to reach hosts behind ISPs gateway (network map provided)

I try to configure my notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 (desktop edition) as a gateway (may be router needed? — this is the bit of confusion for me), so that I can share Internet connection (incoming on eth0) via my WiFi card (wlan1). The issue is that at my gateway everything works fine, but from inside local network (behind my notebook) any hosts that are outside of the local ISP’s network are unreachable. Here is the […]

How do you configure a \domainsharedFolder in windows 2008?

Background: I’ve got several Windows 2008 servers setup by someone else. They are all on one domain, lets call this mydomain Several boxes are accessing a shared folder by going to \mydomainshare1 I found the actual files backing the share on box1 I need to move the location of this share to a larger drive for space reasons I’m familiar with setting up and managing shares like \box1share1, but where do you manage/configure shares that […]

Use NET USE to mount a network drive as read only

I’m using the following code to mount a network drive in a script that configures desktop icons and favorites by copying them when the user logs into windows. NET USE W: \ServerFilesITauto /user:”DOMAINusername” “password” I have read the question How to mount a drive with read only permission but it’s asking about linux. Does anyone know how to mount a network drive as read only via script? You’ll want to set the permissions on the […]

AutoCAD 11 and network file shares

Small network of perhaps half a dozen engineers, currently working on local copies of AutoCAD project files, which are then copied back up to file server (2008 Standard, 1-2 year old Dell server hardware, RAID 5 SAS disks (10k? not positive)) at end of day. To me, this sounds horribly inefficient and error-prone, however, I’ve been told that “AutoCAD and network files = bad idea” and this is gospel. The network is currently 10/100 (perhaps […]
