Hosting a ZFS server as a virtual guest

I’m still new to ZFS. I’ve been using Nexenta but I’m thinking of switching to OpenIndiana or Solaris 11 Express. Right now, I’m at a point of considering virtualizing the ZFS server as a guest within either ESXi, Hyper-V or XenServer (I haven’t decided which one yet – I’m leaning towards ESXi for VMDirectPath and FreeBSD support). The primary reason being that it seems like I have enough resources to go around that I could [...]

Why does Nexenta seem to ignore my /etc/system settings?

I am trying to tune my NFS performance, but for some reason nexenta is ignoring whatever I specify in /etc/system. In the following screen shot it becomes apparent that my manual settings are not being picked up, why? I realize the web gui does give me the option of specifying the tcp_recv_hiwat and tcp_xmit_hiwat, but what about the other variables? Asked by cmaduro tcp_cwnd_max is obsolete On Solaris 11 which uses instead: ipadm set-prop -p [...]

Is it possible to limit folder size in NexentaStor Community Edition

For example if i have a 4TB ZFS Volume, is it possible to create 3 folders and then limit each folder to, say, 2GB. If so, how? I have googled hard and wide but to no avail – all i get is info on the 18TB license restriction. All and any advice gladly taken. —EDIT After testing all the below answers worked, I’m giving my correct answer to GUI related answer as i feel its [...]

Anybody have experience with using Nexenta?

I’m evaluating the Nexenta platform to hopefully one day replace our legacy file servers. I would primarily use it as a CIFS server in an Active Directory environment. Anyone out there have any experience using it? Good? Bad? Which hardware vendor did you go with? Why? Did you build your own (Supermicro) or go prebuilt? Sadly there is a massive stack of Kerberos and AD bugs in opensolaris (and nexenta) that are plaguing MS AD [...]

NexentaStor 3.0.3 Community Edition, default login?

I installed NexentaStor and it went ok (took long time!) what is the default admin username and password for a command line login (cosole)? cheers Just head over to the web interface at port 2000 and the initial installation configuration wizard will guide you through setting up the admin as well as root logins. scalable storage solution using ZFS: OSOL / Nexenta?

some one commented that ZFS is not a distibuted file system and thus more suitable for storage from a box than a cluster. is it possible to start small as NAS with Nexenta / opensolaris and scale up in future by adding more SAS JBODs? if so, what needs to be taken care of at the hardware list? for better performance? i mean what to choose for storage adapters, HBA etc ZFS isn’t a cluster [...]

JBOD SAS adapter for Solaris/Nexenta on Dell PowerEdge 2950?

Given: One or more available Dell PowerEdge 2950 servers The desire to deploy ZFS iSCSI storage using Nexenta or Solaris ZFS uses software RAID Dell’s PERC 5 RAID controllers do not support JBOD Presenting single-disk RAID 0 arrays in lieu of JBOD is not desirable Question: I would like to replace the PERC with a SAS controller that is supported by Solaris and/or Nexenta. Do you have any personal recommendations? Would this be compatible with [...]

Sendmail in Nexenta core 3.0.1

I’m trying to setup sendmail in Nexenta core 3.0.1 (Solaris based OS). All I want is to be able to send emails from that host – like notifications about failures, cron jobs output etc. Initially Nexenta core doesn’t have sendmail so here is what I’ve done: apt-get install sunwsndmu Now there is a sendmail in /usr/sbin/sendmail. When I try to send email from command line: $mail maxim test . It doesn’t give me any error [...]

NexentaStor – Access web console from different subnets

I’m trying to access the NexentaStor web console via port 2000 from a different subnet than the system’s main IP address. In my situation, this is either over a VPN or to access a remote Nexenta appliance over a private network. I can see the system via ping and telnet to port 2000, but the NMV interface does not work. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? 9 times out of 10, this is not [...]

When to Use Nexenta or OpenFiler or GlusterFS

I am not an expert in storage solution and I ma eager to understand the big picture when choosing Storage OS like when we choose to Nexentastor or OpenFiler or GlusterFS Those three apps are only the example since from my understanding each has its own characters that can be bound together If anyone here can give further explanation I will be very grateful openfiler is good if you need an iSCSI or feature-rich NAS [...]
