Does running apt-get update/upgrade require a nginx reboot?

Each time or often enough when I run apt-get update then upgrade, I get a nginx 502 error. Rebooting the server brings everything back up. I’m guessing I have to restart nginx each time? BTW, how can I figure out where my nginx is installed so I can call reboot on it? its been a while since I terminalled into this test vps (still learning) I do not know what /etc/init.d/nginx in Ubuntu does, but […]

Nginx causing high load with not many active connections

I have a linux machine 64bit (centos5.5), 2.83GHz Q9550, 6gb ram and a single SATA 500gb drive. From this machine I only serve thumbnails, most around 10kb in size and at this point there are about 7 million thumbnails on the server. I have them setup in a /25/25/25/25 folder setup which was recommended to me. On average the nginx status report shows that im serving about 300 to 400 active connections. EXAMPLE: Active connections: […]

How can I keep my web server’s log files from becoming too large?

Note: I am using Apache2 (on Linux), but I asked in a general sense (for Linux only) because I’d also like to know the “best” way to do accomplish this in a general (since I’m about to deploy a large site on Nginx, or Cherokee). My log files are becoming huge after just a few weeks. I need to keep them around temporarily, but I’d like to delete entries that are older than 2 weeks, […]

What are the Differences between HAProxy and Ngnix in reverse proxy mode?

What are the differences between HAProxy and Nginx when it comes to their abilities as a reverse proxy? HAProxy is really just a load balancer/reverse proxy. Nginx is a Webserver that can also function as a reverse proxy. Here are some differences: HAProxy: Does TCP as well as HTTP proxying More rate limiting options The author answers questions here on Server Fault Nginx: Supports SSL directly Is also a caching server No support for HTTP/1.1 […]

How to use nginx to proxy to a host requiring authentication?

How can I setup an nginx proxy_pass directive that will also include HTTP Basic authentication information sent to the proxy host? This is an example of the URL I need to proxy to: http://username:password@192.168.0.5/export?uuid=1234567890 The end goal is to allow 1 server present files from another server (the one we’re proxying to) without exposing the URI of the proxy server. I have this working 90% correct now from following the Nginx config found here: http://kovyrin.net/2010/07/24/nginx-fu-x-accel-redirect-remote/ […]

nginx Rewrite with Trailing Slash

I’m using nginx with the following rewrite: rewrite ^/feed/?$ /index.xml last; When I try to access: http://domain/feed/ I works great. But when I access: http://domain/feed It does not add the trailing slash. I’d like to add a trailing slash automatically when I access the link above, anyone know a solution to this? rewrite ^/feed$ /feed/ permanent; rewrite ^/feed/$ /index.xml last; Check more discussion of this question. Crazy problem with Nginx, PHP5-FPM on Ubuntu

I’ve been trying to get a domain from shared hosting to my new VPS. Everything was working just 100% fine, and then all of a sudden rewrites stopped working, pictures that should work started returning 404s. I’ve got no idea why, but for some reason on my site: http://www.onlythebible.com/ only the home page works, all the other pages depend on rewrites which were working perfectly fine at one stage, but all of a sudden stopped […]

Can I have both apache and nginx serve my websites?

I have an existing apache serving a couple of sites. Now I have a new django site that’s ajax intensive and so I’m planning to run it on apache’s mod_wsgi but I’ll use nginx as a reverse proxy. Is it possible to have nginx be a reverse proxy to this new django site while make apache serve the other sites directly without using nginx? Also if you can give me a rough setup on how […]
