networking with one NIC and access to internet and virtual machines

I have installed opennebula and I have followed this tutorial. Unfortunately I cannot ssh to the virtual machines that appear to be in a running state and already have an IP. The problem might be that I have one NIC and although I read that I should use bridging I am not sure if this is possible and how. brctl show command output is bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces br0 8000.50e549b5e2aa no eth0 […]

What is my NIC ID?

I need to get my NIC ID for a temporarily software license to be generated for me. How should I find my NIC ID? I have found contradictory information on the web. Some suggested that I run getmac.exe: C:\Windows\System32>getmac.exePhysical Address Transport Name =================== ========================================================== D4-BE-D9-1C-4F-C7 \Device\Tcpip_{7E28ABA4-55A5-4ECC-9B9A-8A440CDB9B95} 24-77-03-3E-B2-9C Media disconnected 7C-E9-D3-FE-40-41 Media disconnected 24-77-03-3E-B2-9D Media disconnected From that, I assume my NIC ID is {7E28ABA4-55A5-4ECC-9B9A-8A440CDB9B95}. But then others have suggested to go to Device Manager -> […]

Why have a server with 6 NICs [closed]

So we are using a pretty powerful server at work, a Dell PowerEdge R710 Server, which comes with 6 1GB NICs. I’ve searched and thought a lot but am hard pressed as to why one would want a server with 6 NICs, what would you use them for. There is an excellent related question Is there any reason to have 2 NICs on a server? However most of the answers make sense when you have […]

vmware not getting ip on dell r620

Installed a new ESXi 5.1 on a new Dell R620 When connecting to the iDrac (Enterprise) from the dedicated iDrac connection I can see 1 NIC connected (beside the integrated jack) The problem is that when launching the server, the ESXi is NOT getting an IP – it shows as loop back IP DHCP is enabled Tried to restart management network What’s next? Asked by Saariko VMware usually takes DHCP from the first nic. From […]

What is the fastest way to connect two machines for a ping-pong test? [closed]

I need to do a latency test between two machines, basically a ping-pong packet test. I wonder what is the fastest connection I can have between those two machines. I imagine my options are: Ethernet through a router, but then my bottleneck will probably be the router unless you can recommend me a cheap and very fast router Ethernet through a switch, but then my bottleneck will probably be the switch unless you can recommend […]

Very odd behavior with a Realtek NIC in ESXi 5

I am experiencing a strange issue in ESXi 5. I just installed a new NIC (RTL8169, which is supported), but ESXi only recognizes it on the first reboot after the installation. So in order: Shutdown the server, Install the NIC, ESXi boots, NIC being recognize, Reboot another time, NIC is not recognized anymore by ESXi. To make it work again, I need to completely remove the card, reboot ESXi without the NIC, reboot it again, […]

How do I setup a NIC for outgoing connections and the other to serve my Squid proxy?

I have an internal network (192.168.2.0/24) that I’m supposed to connect to a proxy. I’ve already installed and test(with a little traffic) an Squid 3 cache/proxy server in a Ubuntu 12.04 box with this IP address: 192.168.2.102 eth0. Also, I have another physical NIC with IP 192.168.2.101 eth1. The setup that I’ve done consists in the Ubuntu box going out to internet and serving the Squid in the same eth0 NIC. I have the concern […]

Intel PRO/1000 Server NIC on Windows latency. How to measure?

Please note – this question is about latency of the card itself. Not latency of internet or anything else. Thank you for your attention on this matter. It is often said that good server NIC does make difference compared to low grade cards and on-board Ethernet chips. I understand that on-board chip will likely consume CPU time and stand-alone card would use its own chip. Also server card would be faster than low-grade card. Are […]

In Ubuntu, ensure that the same NIC gets assigned the same interface each time it comes up

I’m running an Ubuntu 9.10 server that has multiple NICs in it. I’d like to make sure that each time the kernel boots up, the NIC with MAC address 01:23:45:67:89:ab gets assigned to eth0 and the one with MAC address ba:98:76:54:32:10 gets assigned to eth1. On Fedora, I was able to do this by specifying the MAC address in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=01:23:45:67:89:ab # the rest of the configuration goes here (and similarly for ifcfg-eth1). Is […]
