FreeBSD vs. Illumos [closed]

I am using FreeBSD since some years now for server use and archlinux for desktop. I really use many features of FreeBSD (ports, zfs, jails, pf, …) now I read about Illumos an OpenSolaris derivate. OpenSolaris itself aslong as I know isn’t getting developed anymore. Solaris belongs to Oracle and Linux misses a lot of things known from unix. The only contra is that FreeBSD has not that big community (don’t know why) what is […]

I have come across a tool named Praid.exe but having read the documentation I get the impression it is only usable on IBM RAID configurations. Has anyone set the RAID configurationsfor a HP device during provisioning? or does anyone know of a tool that may offer the ability to do so? I am using WinPE environment post-OS. […]

IIS differences on different OS

Background: I’m trying to use WCAT to pound my web application and test out the performance. However, I’m not sure I’m testing on the right combination of IIS & OS. Question What are the limitations of IIS on different OS? I heard from one source that IIS 5.1 on windows XP can only handle max of 10 concurrent connections, does it even make sense for me to pound it with 1000 concurrent connections? In a […]

GlassFish on Windows vs RedHat

I have a basic three tier web application, and I want to use GlassFish. Assuming same admin skills, any difference in having the host OS be Windows 2003 Server or RedhHat? Sooner or later you’ll probably run in to problems when deploying on Win2K3 due to Windows file locking issues. But you’ll learn to work around it – one way or another. Also see this question: All else equal, I would not select Windows as […]

What is a Process Handle?

What is a process handle and what can we know about a running process through the “handle count” property in a task explorer? A process handle is an integer value that identifies a process to Windows. The Win32 API calls them a HANDLE; handles to windows are called HWND and handles to modules HMODULE. Threads inside processes have a thread handle, and files and other resources (such as registry keys) have handles also. The handle […]
