I need to take an image of a drive. I’m working from a bootable CD, so I have the option to decruft before taking the image. The Windows installation on the drive has both hyberfil.sys and pagefile.sys which I would rather not include in the image. If I delete these from the drive, will Windows recreate these files if necessary? EDIT The Windows installation on the drive in question was shut-down cleanly. Asked by spender [...]Continue Reading »
We have a 3 node Hyper-V cluster with each server having 96GB RAM and 2 73GB disks in a RAID 1 for the host machine OS (2008 R2). The last thing we want to happen is for the host to expand the pagefile.sys and consume the entire C drive. It is currently a little over 16GB. What would be the recommendation for setting the min and max pagefile.sys size? Note: This is for the hosts, [...]Continue Reading »
I am setting up 18 new machines for our company, and I have instructions from my new boss on setting up a Pagefile and Partition. I have looked at their existing machines to base the new setups off of, but there is no consistency between any 2 machines, which has left me extremely frustrated to say the least. My instructions are… 1) Set a static pagefile (use recommended value as max/min), set it on SSD [...]Continue Reading »
I am making a drive image that will be deployed to several computers, and I’m tweaking it for performance. It is a Windows XP image. Considering there is only one hard drive, will the machine gain performance if I place the Windows pagefile on a separate partition, possibly FAT16 (instead of NTFS as the OS partition)? I’m thinking of this because Linux does it, actually it uses the raw partition as “swap space”, which is [...]Continue Reading »
I would like to move my pagefile.sys from my c: to my d: on SBS 2008 what is the best way for me to do this You can use the standard System Properties > Performance Options to move the Pagefile, but make sure that SYSTEM has full control on D:. EDIT More detailed instructions: Right-click Computer > Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > click Settings… under Performance > Advanced tab then Change button. Check [...]Continue Reading »
What are the opinions on allowing virtual memory inside a virtual machine? For example, a host machine w/8 Gig of memory, I could run 4 VMs each w/2 Gig (roughly) and there would be no host swapping. However, in each VM I could have a 2Gig page file so the virtual server had 4Gig of usable memory, 2 physical 2 virtual. OR… I could give each VM 4 Gig of “memory” and have the host [...]Continue Reading »
I’m running Windows 7 on a dual core, x64 AMD with 8GB RAM. Do I even need a pagefile? Will removing it help or hurt performance? Would it make a difference if this is a server or a desktop? Does Windows 7 vs. Windows 2008 make a difference with a page file? TL;DR version: Let Windows handle your memory/pagefile settings. The people at MS have spent a lot more hours thinking about these issues than [...]Continue Reading »
Windows has a “system managed size” option for pagefile size, which seems to lack precise documentation. What exactly does Windows do when you choose this? Does it simply select default min and max sizes, or does it do something fancier? Does windows shrink the pagefile and grow it later (with annoying dialogs)? It does exactly what it says on the tin: the OS manages the size of the pagefile, which can shrink or grow dynamically, [...]Continue Reading »
Does anyone know how to move the page file on Windows Server 2008. Everything seems to be in a different spot on this OS! Also, I would like to tweak it’s size. If you know where that is (probably in the same spot) please let me know. Advanced System Settings, on the Advanced tab click the Performance/Settings button. Advanced System Settings can be reached by right clicking My Computer and choosing Properties or from Server [...]Continue Reading »
I am using Windows 7 RC and wanted to know if it was possible to use an SD card ( I have a slot for it in my laptop) to hold the page file. When I try to change my virtual memory settings, it doesn’t list the drive as available to use. The SD card would be classed as a removable device, which would explain why it’s not usable to hold the page file (removing [...]Continue Reading »
