Allowing manager access to user’s email stealthily

Environment: Exchange 2010 SP1, Outlook 2010 Pro Plus We have a manager that needs access to a user’s live email box without that user knowing about it (suspected wrong doing). Obviously, we could give the manager Full Access permission in Exchange but if the manager accidentally clicks on an unread item or deletes something then it might give it away that they are accessing it. Also, we can’t add the manager as a reviewer to [...]

What is this user name for and how did it get created?

When I created a website named Portal on my IIS 7.5 on the website permissions->security I got this user. What is its purpose? From what I have read the ApplicationPool runs under NetworkService permissions, but I noticed if I gave Portal user full permissions I could do the saving I wanted in the virtual folder without needing to impersonate any other user (I used to impersonate admin which was a bad idea). So I guess [...]

Cannot Send Item error in Outlook – permissions to registry?

The issue I am trying to solve is to do with users getting a Cannot Send Item error in Outlook 2007 connecting to Exchange 2007. Basically if there is an image in the email (either one they have pasted in or one from another email in the chain) they get a “Cannot Send Item” error. Initially thought it was a citrix issue but users get it when they RDP to a server as well. Changing [...]

“Target the specific user you will be using and assign it user id 0/group 0”

I am trying to virtualize an Ubuntu machine using VMWare vCenter Converter, but ran into permissions issues. I followed the instructions of part 1 and 2 on this page but when I got to “For Ubuntu operating systems further configuration is needed” I started running into trouble. I’m decent at Linux, but I’m not an experienced sysadmin. How do I Target the specific user you will be using and assign it user id 0/group 0? [...]

How Do I Restrict Views of a Custom List by Group in Sharepoint 2007?

I’m pretty new to Sharepoint and what I would like to do is create a huge master list of all our employees and then make different “views” on that person depending on the persons group For example: A new employee might have Salary info Security info Personnel info Contract info I would like to have all that in one row (per employee) but then when someone from the hr group logs in they can only [...]

Exchange 2007 – Public Folder Permissions

So Public Folders – I’ve always come into an Exchange infrastructure whereby permissions are already configured and I’ve merely needed to add the odd user here and there on a public folder via Powershell to give them access. My question is – what is the default permission that would allow all users in Exchange access to a public folder, is there a group? i.e. A top level Public Folder with lots of folders beneath it [...]

change Ubuntu folder permissions for short periods of time

I’m building a site using the Yii framework. It’s hosted on Ubuntu and I’m developing on Windows. When I upload changes to the live site (via filezilla), I need to change permissions on folders or files, upload the files, then change the permissions back. It’s time consuming. Is there a way to change permission for a specific period of time, say 1 hour? So after an hour, they will change back? Asked by Mark You [...]

I want to allow users to control the em1 device in Linux: When I run this command: ifdown em1 em1 is the embedded ethernet card 1, I want the user to be able to turn off the ethernet card. Apache running as root instead of user specified in httpd.conf

I’m trying to enable WordPress to upload files to the wp-content folder without setting permissions for the folder to 777. However, I’m having some difficulties. The group and user set for the wp-content folder match the group and user Apache is configured to be using in httpd.conf. However, when I run the below command, it appears that Apache is actually running as root rather than the user specified in httpd.conf. httpd.conf Configuration User xxx Group [...]

Boot.ini on Windows Server 2003 R2

I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 with 48 GB of RAM; server has been running strong for quite some time. Recently our boot.ini was modified causing issues, most likely by our remote administrators. Now the server is only showing 14 GB of RAM. This has caused major performance issues for our end users. Our remote administrators have stated “we don’t change the boot.ini settings(switches)”. However, I know for a fact that all of the [...]
