Ping hostname returns another hostname in output : what does it mean?

When I ping the server sip3.voip-centrex.net, I get this output: PING sip3.voip-centrex.net (194.98.81.144) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from mpfrrelay.michaelpage.fr (194.98.81.144): icmp_req=1 ttl=50 time=35.7 ms 64 bytes from mpfrrelay.michaelpage.fr (194.98.81.144): icmp_req=2 ttl=50 time=38.1 ms 64 bytes from mpfrrelay.michaelpage.fr (194.98.81.144): icmp_req=3 ttl=50 time=34.6 ms Domain name does not match. What does it mean ? Asked by alci The DNS system has many kinds of records. “A” records map names to IP addresses. “PTR” records map […]

Command line tools for ping HTTP?

Background : It’s a common question as we can search at google “ping works but http does not” ping is not a reliable test of network connectivity. ping working just means enough of the IP stack is up to process ICMP Echo requests (that’s not a huge portion of the system compared to what’s required for SSH and web servers). We could have had what I call a “partial panic” (Kernel blew up, but the […]

Data obtained from ping: is it round trip or one way?

I have 2 servers, each in two separate locations. I need to host an application on one, and the database server on the other. From the app server, if I ping the database server, on average I get about 30ms. My question is: When I query the database from the app; Is it going to take 30 ms + database_server_query_run_time Or; Is it going to take 30 ms + database_server_query_run_time + 30ms I would like […]

Odd ping result on network

Can anyone explain why when I ping 192.168.23.019 it gives me a reply from 192.168.23.17? Then If I ping .23.19 I get a request timed out reply. But I can RDP onto .23.19 These are virtual machines.. Does that make a difference? Asked by Axle As poige hints, 019 is a messed up octal way to say 17. 010 = 8, add 9 to that you get 17. So when you ping .019, you accidentally […]

Unable to ping my Ubuntu AWS instance

I’m new to AWS, just setup a ubuntu ec2 and I’ve made a security group which allows me to ssh in and that’s about all for now. What do I have to do to make it so I can also ping my instance? Asked by Jeremy Iglehart Just go to the security group for the instance, click on the “inbound” tab, choose “Create a new rule” dropdown and select “All ICMP” and then click +Add […]

Why can’t my networks reach each other?

We have two Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 routers, with the default firmware, DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (10/31/11) std – build 17798. Each has a separate cable internet connection with a public static IP address. They are both in the 24.123.68.0/24 space. Both of them can contact pretty much the whole internet, and they can both be accessed out on the internet with no problem, but for some reason they can’t talk to each other! When I try to ping […]

Can a local network IP be pinged from outside the network?

I’m assuming not. I’m working on someone else’s program that calls to an IP which I assumed was a local IP but when I pinged it, it didn’t fail to ping it, and returned packets with a ~100ms delay. What does this mean? Asked by dsp_099 It depends on a lot of factors- Is the network you are pinging into/out of firewalled? Is the network you are pinging into NATed? If so, do you have […]

Need help troubleshooting highly variable ping times

I’m at work using Citrix (think Remote Desktop) to connect to client sites. With my job I have to write a fair bit of code while I’m connected remotely via Citrix, so the latency of my internet connection is important. If I’m getting ping times above 250ms, then it becomes almost impossible to scroll, click or type with accuracy. Recently my Comcast business internet has been exhibiting highly variable ping times. If I ping google.com, […]

When i do the same using the ip it does not freeze. NEVER. i did for example sudo ping -f IP (It does not freeze) then i did sudo ping -f DomainName (It freezes after a couple of seconds) Why does ping flooding an […]
