Do you skip a rack unit between servers?

It seems like there’s a lot of disagreement in mindsets when it comes to installing rackmount servers. There have been threads discussing cable arms and other rackmount accessories, but I’m curious: Do you leave an empty rack unit between your servers when you install them? Why or why not? Do you have any empirical evidence to support your ideas? Is anyone aware of a study which proves conclusively whether one is better or not? If […]

rackmount network USB hubs?

We are virtualizing our license servers and have to start using network USB hubs for the authentication keys. The ones I’ve found will be messy in a rack. Has anyone ever seen a rackmountable version? If that’s not an option, are there any rackmountable normals hubs? Or maybe some setup I haven’t come up with? You mean something like this: Metal 7-Port USB 2.0 Powered Slim Hub for PC-MAC with Power Adapter Industrial USB Hub […]

Voice patch panel wired to outer pair

Our Intertel phone system uses an unusual wiring scheme at the phone by using the outer pair (pins 2 and 5) of wires on a phone jack. I am looking for anyone that knows of a vendor that sells 24 port patch panels that have 25 pair Amphenol connectors on the back wired to the outer pair of pins on an 8P2C jack on the front. I don’t have any issue finding products wired for […]

Tool to assist loading servers into a rack?

Is there any kind of tool to assist in loading an unloading servers? I realized that I lack both height and upper body strength to remove servers from the upper tiers of a rack? I could not find the name or type of equipment that folks are using to do this kind of work safely? Why is everyone giving the wrong answer? It’s called a scissor lift: They make servers that are hundreds of pounds. […]

Source for custom rackmount chassis to build bulk storage server?

I need to build a couple of really large bulk storage servers for a project I am working on. I don’t need fast response, just big, dumb storage. lots of it to hold statistical data going back to the turn of the last century. I was thinking to build something like the Backblaze od. I have all the parts except the chassis to hold the drives in the vertical configuration. I am having a hard […]

Rack mounted cooling unit?

We have a small mini rack which houses an X-Serve, Raid and Router. We added some more high performance fan units but still find that it gets quite hot in there and have recently been having to keep the door open. Can anyone recommend some kind of cooler device which can be installed in here? The rack sits in our studio so it can’t be too noisy. The back door is also solid, so it […]

Dell “identify server” light in FreeBSD?

Does anyone know of a way to turn on the identification light on a Dell rack-mount server. This is the light which you can switch on locally by pushing the (i) button on the front of the server which turns on lights in the front and rear of the server? The machine is a Dell Poweredge 860. I’m trying to identify a server in Utah from AZ. Haven’t had much experience with it, so forgive […]

Rack layout tools

I’m wondering if there’s any tools (preferably offline) that would allow me to layout all of the new equipment that will be going into several standard racks. Currently I’m using Excel to map out all of the slots columns for the data but I suspect that there is some better method of doing this. Suggestions? Edit: Dell has an online tool, but doesn’t seem very good at actually saving the data that you’re working on […]

noise damping for rackmount servers on-the-cheap

The gist: Out-of-warranty rackmount servers can often be purchased very cheaply. The major downside to deployment outside a data-center (for instance, in one’s garage) is the noise. I would like to collect suggestions for creating effective noise-dampening/baffling for 1U, 2U, and 3U rack mount servers using cheap, readily-available materials (this is the key constraint). Links to plans with pictures would be ideal. I was able to drastically reduce the noise from my recently-purchased ($60) HP […]

Rackmount Server Reliability by Brand Name and Form Factor

Our company runs e-commerce web sites (thousands) on two clusters in two separate data centers. Basically, all we require to operate is rack mountable server nodes. Each node needs: 1.) 4 or 8 cores 2.) 32 gb ram 3.) 1 250 gb sata disk 4.) 2 Port, Gigabit, Ethernet Adapters 5.) Ability to boot Windows XP Pro That it. We run about 40 such nodes in a fully redundant, always up (hopefully!) cluster (we wrote […]
