Preforming an Administrative task, with a service account, via batch

Trying to install a piece of software from a network location, and everything works great except the software requires admin rights to install. Is there a way I can pre enter an admin service account that will allow this to install? Without the user needing to provide the details? Alternately, is there a way I can give the batch file Admin rights thus passing them off to the Installer file? The best way I have […]

How to lock down a folder for an administrator?

In a windows 2008 R2 server with multiple administrator accounts, is it possible to create private folders (one per admin) in one drive that the other administrators cannot unlock (gain access to)? I have tried using deny “Full control” on a folder from one account, but the other account could simply remove that restriction. No, you can’t do this with permissions as any administrator has full access to the system. You could do it using […]

Windows users and groups management software

I need software to manage a large number of groups for a FTP server. Ideally this software should also allow managing the associated NTFS rights for the folders on FTP (if they still match the definition for example, or propagate rights changes to the disk). I do not need a complex and very expensive IT management suite, just a solution for the described problem. Prices up to about 5000$ are ok. After having searched for […]

How do I tell if a certain AD user has admin rights on Windows Server 2003?

How do I tell if a certain AD user has admin rights on a Server 2003 box? I’m using Enterprise Edition. It depends if the server is a domain controller or not. If it’s not a domain controller, all users have admin rights, who are members of the local Administrators Group (see Computer Management > Local Users and Groups – Administrators.) If the server is a domain controller, users who a members of the Administrators […]

What are the arguments for and against a network policy where the sys admin knows users passwords?

I’d like to know pros and cons.. reasons for and against the idea of sys admin’s maintaining user account lists with passwords.. and additionally not allowing those users to change their passwords. I understand that systems like Windows seem to encourage the idea that users should maintain their own password security and be allowed to change their password at will. I can appreciate the need for privacy and users having alibis to protect themselves in […]

How do I grant users the ability to install windows services?

I’d like to be able to allow the development team to install services on a Win2003 server. They can already connect via RDP/FTP with limited accounts but I’d like to be able to grant installation privileges. How do I do that without granting admin rights? (The services are created using the .NET framework so we’re installing with C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727installutil.exe) Delegated permission to install services is going to be a little bit tough. There is a “SC_MANAGER_CREATE_SERVICE” […]

How to add a linux user with a random or invalid password from a script

I want to add a user to the linux system from a script, but I don’t want to invent or care for the password. This should be done automatically. The goal is to generate ssh-keys and this user needs only to login remotely. Or alternatively this user will be use from a sudo user via sudo su – thatuser. I want to save the hassle inventing and typing some secure password every time I create […]

Separate RMS Server for Exchange 2007?

We are running Exchange 2007 SP2 on Server 2003. I have already installed the pre-licensing agent on the HUB servers and enabled the transport agents. I’m also running Windows 7 so there is no need for the pre-licensing agent on the client. I’m still getting prompted to sign up for a Live ID when I try to send a “Do not forward” email. I have already installed and enabled these pre-licensing agents. Do I actually […]
