Folder creation date is very recent, while last modified is years ago

We’re experiencing some weird stuff with our roaming user profiles. We use folder redirection for Documents/Pictures/Music/Destkop/Downloads, yet these folders are being created in the roaming user profile (they shouldn’t). Looking at the dates for these folders it’s quite obvious that we’re hitting some kind of bug with NTFS. How else is this possible (pic)? Asked by pauska The folder was copied on 18.01.2013 (1/18/13) from one that was last modified 14.07.2009 (7/14/09). Answered by Chris […]

Extracting Outlook part of Win 7 profile only

Where exactly are the Outlook configuration settings contained in a Windows 7 Office 2010 user profile? I want to move a user from Win 7 Office 2010 to Win 8 Office 2013 but rather than keep the whole user profile I would rather start with a new Win 8 profile and just add back the Win 7 Outlook configuration if that is possible. Asked by NickC The key you need is: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles […]

How to use process monitor to view or log a windows login?

We’re having some issues with Windows 7 Roaming profiles and I was reading here that the login process can be monitored using process monitor. “There are a couple of ways to configure Process Monitor to record logon operations: one is to use Sysinternals PsExec to launch it in the session 0 so that it survives the logoff and subsequent logon and another is to use the boot logging feature to capture activity from early in […]

Child Folder inheriting a permission that parent folder does not have (NTFS)

I’m reconfiguring roaming profiles on my network to use proper NTFS security settings according to this article. I have reset the following permissions on the roaming profile parent folder: CREATOR OWNER, Full Control, Subfolder and files only User group with profiles, List folder, Create folders, This folder only System, Full Control, This folder, subfolders, and files Then I select one of the actual roaming profile folders and follow these steps to fix the NTFS settings: […]

Disabling local profiles in active directory?

I’m using active directory to manage logins to a large number of servers. We have various admins that will be connecting via RDP to these servers. Is there a way I can force windows to remove their local profiles after they log out? I found the ‘Delete user profiles older then a specified number of days on system restart’ and ‘Delete cached copies of roaming profiles’, however the former doesn’t help a whole lot (these […]

Windows 7 (roaming profiles) not seeing printers deployed with printer management?

I’ve got a network with about 15-20 printers deployed using printer management that is setup on a Win 2008 server. All the users have roaming profiles. All the XP machines get all the printers without issue and the users can print to them all without issue. I’ve got at least 1-2 users who are on Windows 7 boxes that see no printers; I cannot figure out why and am not sure where to look. The […]

Excluding folders from a roaming profile, client-side

I am using a laptop connected to our company’s domain network, and after logging in this morning it told me that I have exceeded my roaming profile space. After looking into the issue I realized that most of this space was taken up by the .android and .eclipse folders (I am developing Android apps) in my user folder. I was hence wondering whether there was any way to exclude these from being synced with the […]

What parts of a Roaming Profile get uploaded in Windows 7?

In previous versions of Windows, the Roaming Profile is uploaded only when the user logs off. However, in Windows 7, a Group Policy setting can allow the registry file to be uploaded in the background. The setting is called Background upload of roaming user profile’s registry file while user is logged on. However, with this setting set, the Win32_UserProfile LastUploadTime field in WMI still only reflects the last log off. I assume that this is […]

“default” profile folder in a folder redirection/roaming profiles setup

Usually, under Windows Server 2008 R2, there is a folder c:usersdefault. This folder is a template for new users logging on at the machine. So, if you create the folder c:usersdefaultDesktopTest every new user will have a copy of the folder “Test” on his desktop. In my environment we are using folder redirection and roaming profiles. Where can I find the default folder now? The c:usersdefault folders on the single machines are not used. The […]
