How to assign an different SSL certificate for the IIS7+ Management Service on Server-Core?
When installing the Management service for IIS7+ a self-signed SSL certificate is created and assigned, it has the name ‘WMSvc-ComputerName’. In the GUI version I can change this to a different ‘proper’ certificate installed on the server, so it is trusted by remote clients. The GUI module for the Management Service is not available when connecting to the server remotely. So I need to change it using the command line on the server itself. How [...]

I’d love to get a stripped down TFS install on a virtual machine, which is why I’m thinking about this. I know R2 comes with the CLR and a subset of a framework, so that limitation is (possibly?) gone, so it might be possible. Does anybody have any information on doing this? Have you tired it? I’m not seeing much on google about getting this done… You can’t install .NET framework on 2008 Server Core [...]

Is there a way to modify the NIC bind order in Hyper-V Server/Server Core? For some reason, one of our Hyper-V servers decided to reverse the bind order of two of the six NIC ports on the machine, making it inconsistent with all of our other servers (not to mention being out of sequence with the phyical layout of the NICs). I know this can be done via a network settings GUI in the full [...]

Now that Core 2008 R2 added .net support, I wonder if it’s possible to run SharePoint 2010 Web Frontends on it? Found some articles saying you can’t run it on 2008 Core (no ASP.net support), but haven’t found anything about R2 Core. According to the SharePoint product team, the answer is no. http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2010/01/22/operating-system-requirements-of-sharepoint-2010.aspx Check more discussion of this question. I have a Hyper-V Core server 2008 that I administer via command line and remote tools. We have now got a new backup system in place and it involves me connecting an External USB drive (G:) to backup system state files. My question is how should I safely remove the drive for its weekly offsite swap? I’ve tried using the devcon tool however it just says the ‘removal failed with no devices removed’ with no [...]

I’m actually using Microsoft Hyper-V Server, which I would think would be similar to a server core installation. My goal is to use OpenFiler to store my VHD files and access them via iSCSI. run iscsicpl, it’s the exact same interface as Win7 (and very similar to 2008/Vista). It’s all already built in and ready to go. Make sure you autostart the iSCSI service: sc config msiscsi start=auto I highly recommend setting up a small [...]

I’m an MSDN subscriber. I would like to install Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core, but when I insert MSDN #4629 DVD there’re only full versions of Windows Server 2008 R2. How am I supposed to install Server Core then? Any suggestions? Is it possible to covert it back to server core when a GUI version’s already installed? You use the same media. As part of the install process you’re prompted to select the edition. [...]

So, Microsoft added .NET support to Windows Server 2008 R2 Core, but which is the latest version that is supported? I know it has to be either .NET 3.5 or .NET 3.5 SP1, but which is it? Windows Server 2008 R2, as well as Windows 7, comes with built-in .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2webtechnologies/thread/ac1bf719-0a88-4b5d-be98-395f2623e805 Check more discussion of this question.
