Intel server hardware failure; does not work
I have a rackmount server from INTEL that suddenly stopped working. The model is SR2400SYSD2. The server was functional and was shut down normaly for relocation. After being connected again it refuses to function at all. Both VGA ports (back and front) send no signal to any connected monitor. The LEDs on the keyboard do not shine. The thing is that when the power switch is pressed the server power-cycles normaly. I have openned the [...]

I am planning on taking a c hard drive from a computer I am no longer using and adding it to another computer as a secondary hard drive for more space. The old computer was windows vista and the computer I am installing it in is xp. Since the old hard drive was a C drive, when I connect it to the other computer will it want to boot from vista? I would like to [...]

As per title. Basically what are Dell’s online tools for checking or changing BIOS/RAID-controller level conf. For Linux. Asked by Alex The Dell suite is called “Open Manage”. You have a lot of info here on their site. Basically on a rpm-based distro ( in my experience this works very well with rhel-based distros) you just have to do: wget -q -O – http://linux.dell.com/repo/hardware/latest/bootstrap.cgi | bash yum install srvadmin-storage ( actually dell recommends srvadmin-all, but [...]

I’ve recently had to replace the System Board on my P4300 G2 SAN due to a failure to find a boot drive. Unfortunately after replacing this it won’t boot past the POST screen, it identifies that there is a fan missing and that “The Fan Solution is insufficient”. There are 6 headers and only 4 connections. I can’t take it’s partner in the pair out to look at it’s connections as it’s running our production [...]

Here is the scenario. Say you are going to be a purchasing great deal of servers, but first are trying out hardware from a vendor, and you need to qualify it. Also, say that the custom software that will run on it is not even written (or the current version is so ‘alpha’ it have much input into this process). Edit: The hardware is CPU heavy and memory heavy, but light on disk usage. (mainly [...]

Disclaimer: I’m an undergraduate intern and this is my first server build I’ve been asked to build a small server for our team around the office. We are trying to maximize space (our motherboard has room for 6 SATA hard drives) and hopefully get as much speed/performance as we can. The server is mainly to store medium-large files (from 1GB to 10GB) and they will be accessed through a network. I have found most of [...]

I co-own a company with a friend of mine and we have decided to buy a new server to support our business (our current server is an Asus EEE Box, working great but too limited ). I should mention that we are web developers but occasionally we do small-office sys admin. Thus, 99% of time we work on GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu) but from time to time we need to setup a Windows environment to assist [...]

If a server is going to run virtual machines on it, each with 2 cores and 3gb RAM, is it more efficient (processing-power-wise, not in energy costs or parts cost) to run one huge server with quad 20-core processors and 120gb RAM (128gb) or to use maybe four dual-cpu-10 core processor servers with 120gb RAM? And at what point does it start becoming less efficient? Surely there must be a happy medium. Any hypervisor will [...]
