Ubuntu unattended upgrades to run at a certain time

I’m trying to work out the best way to run unattended upgrades every Thursday at 3am but can only see a way to run this weekly but not a given time. I thought of one way would be to have a script that is called by cron on Thursday at 3am The below script would work just for security updates #!/bin/sh sh -c ‘grep precise-security /etc/apt/sources.list > /etc/apt/secsrc.list’ sh -c ‘apt-get -o Dir::Etc::sourcelist=”secsrc.list” \ -o […]

Why is Varnish not caching my index page properly?

I have a Varnish set up in front of Apache 2 on Ubuntu 11.10. I’m using this VCL file: backend default { .host = “127.0.0.1”; .port = “8080”; }sub vcl_recv { if (req.url ~ “^/web”) { unset req.http.cookie; } if (req.url ~ “administration” || req.url ~ “preview” ) { return(pass); } if (req.http.Cookie) { set req.http.Cookie = “;”+req.http.Cookie; set req.http.Cookie = regsuball(req.http.Cookie, “; +”, “;”); set req.http.Cookie = regsuball(req.http.Cookie, “;(mag_header)=”, “; \1=”); set req.http.Cookie = […]

KVM – Guest does not recognize second NIC

I have a server running Proxmox (a virtualization platform), and created a KVM virtual machine with Ubuntu Server 12.10. After configuring the network, everything works fine, but if I add a second network adapter to that virtual machine, it is not recognized. dmesg | grep -i eth just shows one interface (eth0). EDIT: root@ubuntuserver1:~# lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440FX – 82441FX PMC [Natoma] (rev 02) 00:01.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82371SB PIIX3 ISA […]

Vmware 5.1 Essentials Host with Ubuntu VM – Should I Raid the Guest OS [closed]

Possible Duplicate: Is it necessary to have RAID in a virtual machine? I am in the processing of building up a new VM Host with Essentials 5.1. The server will house several guest OSes including several Ubuntu Linux boxes. The host itself is RAID 5 with 10 total drives, the 10th drive acting as a Global Hot Spare. My question is, with the host configured for RAID, should I configure the Ubuntu Guest OSes with […]

Advice regarding SUID and sudo on Ubuntu Server

Just wanting a bit of advice. I have root access to a server and I want to create a second user and execute everything via sudo should I need to rather than logging in as root. The file /etc/sudoers reads as: Defaults env_reset root ALL=(ALL) ALL %sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL I have added a second user “bob” to the system and added them to the group sudo which should ensure that they can execute root commands. […]

Can’t login anymore via sshd

I have been working with SSH for a long time, but recently I have needed to add another user to my set up. Now michael is sudoer, but the funny thing is, I can login […]

Timeout when trying to connect to github using wget

I’m relatively new to server management and I have a home development server running a LAMP stack on Ubuntu Server version 12.10. I’m trying to download a git repository using Putty via the following command: wget https://api.github.com/repos/avalanche123/Imagine/zipball/v0.3.0 However when doing this the server is unable to connect and times out. What I’ve noticed though is if then try to ping api.github.com it responds as normal, and then if I try the above command again it […]

EC2 Ubuntu with WordPress can’t connect to RDS

I have set up a WordPress website on a Ubuntu 12.04 Amazon ec2 machine by following this tutorial except the fact that I haven’t created a MySQL database and I am using an amazon RDS MySQL service. Everything works fine and I am able to create a configuration file during installation but when the installer asks for MySQL credentials. When I fill in the RDS credentials they don’t work. I even tried entering the credentials […]

How to change SMP affinity of an IRQ on Ubuntu PV domU inside Xen XCP?

I’d like to change IRQ SMP affinity for reasons, outlined in this question: CPU0 is swamped with eth1 interrupts But I can’t — I see Input/output error when I try to write to /proc/irq/*/smp_affinity. Please point me to the HOWTO on the matter. (A formal reference on /proc/irq/*/ would be cool as well.) Gory details: Note that this is a VM (PV domU) inside an Ubuntu-based Xen XCP host. $ uname -a Linux MYHOST 2.6.38-15-virtual […]
