I have a server running Proxmox (a virtualization platform), and created a KVM virtual machine with Ubuntu Server 12.10. After configuring the network, everything works fine, but if I add a second network adapter to that virtual machine, it is not recognized. dmesg | grep -i eth just shows one interface (eth0). EDIT: root@ubuntuserver1:~# lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440FX – 82441FX PMC [Natoma] (rev 02) 00:01.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82371SB PIIX3 ISA [...]Continue Reading »
Possible Duplicate: Is it necessary to have RAID in a virtual machine? I am in the processing of building up a new VM Host with Essentials 5.1. The server will house several guest OSes including several Ubuntu Linux boxes. The host itself is RAID 5 with 10 total drives, the 10th drive acting as a Global Hot Spare. My question is, with the host configured for RAID, should I configure the Ubuntu Guest OSes with [...]Continue Reading »
Just wanting a bit of advice. I have root access to a server and I want to create a second user and execute everything via sudo should I need to rather than logging in as root. The file /etc/sudoers reads as: Defaults env_reset root ALL=(ALL) ALL %sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL I have added a second user “bob” to the system and added them to the group sudo which should ensure that they can execute root commands. I have been working with SSH for a long time, but recently I have needed to add another user to my set up. I followed some instructions I found on the web and did the folllowing. adduser sam sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config AllowUsers michael, sam sudo reboot I set up the user sam completely, added the allow users to the sshd configuration and rebooted. Now michael is sudoer, but the funny thing is, I can login [...]Continue Reading »
I’m relatively new to server management and I have a home development server running a LAMP stack on Ubuntu Server version 12.10. I’m trying to download a git repository using Putty via the following command: wget https://api.github.com/repos/avalanche123/Imagine/zipball/v0.3.0 However when doing this the server is unable to connect and times out. What I’ve noticed though is if then try to ping api.github.com it responds as normal, and then if I try the above command again it [...]Continue Reading »

Everything works fine and I am able to create a configuration file during installation but when the installer asks for MySQL credentials. When I fill in the RDS credentials they don’t work. I even tried entering the credentials [...]Continue Reading »

I’d like to change IRQ SMP affinity for reasons, outlined in this question: CPU0 is swamped with eth1 interrupts But I can’t — I see Input/output error when I try to write to /proc/irq/*/smp_affinity. Please point me to the HOWTO on the matter. (A formal reference on /proc/irq/*/ would be cool as well.) Gory details: Note that this is a VM (PV domU) inside an Ubuntu-based Xen XCP host. $ uname -a Linux MYHOST 2.6.38-15-virtual [...]Continue Reading »
I’m using rinetd on Ubuntu as a port forwarding server. I’m running this on EC2. I need to know which ports are available for me to use for port forwarding. I know that the privileged ports are 0 – 1023, so that means I can start at 1024, correct? Does that also mean that I can use up to 65535? Please remember, this question is specific to Ubuntu. Asked by David Winter This question is [...]Continue Reading »
I’ve recently signed up to SMTP2GO (smtpcorp). I’ve setup postfix on one of EC2 servers and have pointed it to my smtp2go account: relayhost = [smtpcorp.com]:2525 Now all my mail is being routed through SMTP2GO, but the issue is, that the 1000+ emails that are generated by cron job ect are being sent to SMTP2GO using the email address: email@example.com My question is, what would be the best way to stop all these “local” emails [...]Continue Reading »
