IBM Server takes a long time to boot past UEFI to OS

I have a pair of IBM System x3620 servers. These servers do fine once they finally reach the point where the operating system takes over, but it takes them forever to get past the new-fangled UEFI boot system… a good five minutes or so; maybe longer. I haven’t timed it, but it’s the kind of thing where you go get a cup of coffee while you wait and it’s still going when you come back. […]

EFI vs MBR – Installing Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 on 8TB

I’m having some difficulty installing Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 on an Intel Server platform. The server specs is as follows: Intel Grizzly Pass Server System – R2308GZ4GC 2x Intel Xeon 2620 – 2.0 GHZ – BX80621E52620 132 GB of Memory REG-DIMM – TS1GKR72V6H 4x Seagate Constellation ES 2TB 3.5″ 7200rpm 6GB/S – ST32000645NS Intel Big Laurel 4CH 6G SAS RAID 512MB – RS2BL040 On the Intel RAID Controller Setup, I have […]

How to perform a P2V conversion of a Windows Server 2008 R2 EFI system?

As discussed elsewhere, Windows Server 2008/R2 will automatically use the EFI boot loader when installed on EFI systems, and will also automatically use the GPT partitioning scheme on such systems. And you can’t do anything at all about this (other than force the system to switch to BIOS, if this is supported). But, as documented here, VMware Converter is not going to convert GPT disks. Which is actually quite suprising, when considering that it supports […]

Xen only sees 512MB of System RAM. Should be 8GB. (UEFI boot)

I am booting Xen 4.0 from Debian Squeeze, kernel 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64. “xm dmesg” on dom0 shows: Xen-e801 RAM map: 0000000000000000 – 0000000000091400 (usable) 0000000000100000 – 0000000020000000 (usable) System RAM: 511MB (523844kB) “xm info” shows: total_memory : 511 free_memory : 42 The bootloader is grub2 EFI (Debian package grub-efi-amd64 version 1.99-14), configuration follows: multiboot /xen-4.0-amd64.gz placeholder module /vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 placeholder root=/dev/mapper/VG00-root ro reboot=acpi module /initrd.img-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 Any idea why Xen only detects 512MB? Has anyone successfully booted xen under […]

PXE architecture: “BC EFI”

RFC 4578 defines various machine architectures for PXE as follows: Type Architecture Name —- —————– 0 Intel x86PC 1 NEC/PC98 2 EFI Itanium 3 DEC Alpha 4 Arc x86 5 Intel Lean Client 6 EFI IA32 7 EFI BC 8 EFI Xscale 9 EFI x86-64 I’ve tested out two IBM machines (HS22 blade, x3550M3) and they both do EFI PXE boot using the ‘EFI BC’ architecture. What does it stand for? When is it used? […]

How do UEFI and virtual machines relate to each other?

I am trying to get my head around UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) and it’s not entirely clear to me how this affects virtual machines. Thus, there are three parts to this question: Is UEFI an advance in hardware support for virtualization? All other things being equal, would a machine with UEFI be more likely to run a virtual machine more efficiently than one without, or does UEFI cause any performance hits that negate any […]

Installing Windows Server 2008 on IBM x3250 M3 Server with EFI

I’m hoping this question hasn’t been asked before and I’ve spent the last 3 hours trying to find a solution to this but to no avail. Also feel free to edit the tags, I’m fairly new to this site. I have a bootable Windows Server 2008 DVD that I’m trying to install from on our new IBM x3250 M3 server. I’ve tested on my laptop that the DVD does indeed boot and it works perfectly. […]

Force Windows Server 2008 to use legacy BIOS bootloader instead of EFI

We have UEFI servers and have come across a situation where we need to force Windows Server 2008 to boot via the legacy BIOS method instead of through UEFI. Is there a way to tell Windows Server 2008 (either during install or post-install) to ignore the fact that it’s installing onto an EFI machine and instead install and use the legacy BIOS bootloader? I’ve tried a few suggestions which didn’t help: Format disks as MBR […]

How to retrieve Serial Number from Windows on new U/EFI box?

I need to retrieve the hardware serial numbers from a set of new HP mini desktops that need provisioning. This worked in the past using a WSH script to query it via WMI. Unfortunately, the newer models no longer contain a BIOS but rather come with EFI instead. All known ways of querying the information no longer work. I’ve googled the subject quite a bit but all the answers I found recommend the ineffective method […]
