Sharing a Folder on a USB Drive

I’ve been running a 5-drive software RAID under Windows 2003 Server. When it fails, it causes really strange problems that are difficult to deduce. After the third occurrence, I’ve decided to try using a Drobo instead, connected via USB2. The Drobo drive is mapped as Z:, and has a single folder in the root called Repository, which houses all other folders and files. I’ve shared this folder, and added the necessary permissions. I can map […]

rackmount network USB hubs?

We are virtualizing our license servers and have to start using network USB hubs for the authentication keys. The ones I’ve found will be messy in a rack. Has anyone ever seen a rackmountable version? If that’s not an option, are there any rackmountable normals hubs? Or maybe some setup I haven’t come up with? You mean something like this: Metal 7-Port USB 2.0 Powered Slim Hub for PC-MAC with Power Adapter Industrial USB Hub […]

Can you use a USB dongle inside a VMWare ESX Virual Machine?

I need to know if a USB dongle that is required as a license key for a piece of software will accessible from the physical host machine. This will be a small vSphere 4 installation targeting the quick backup and system restore capabilities of VMWare, not specifically HA, so I am not to worried about the virtual machine automatically failing over to another physical machine and the dongle not being accessible. Does ESX have the […]

Does this device exist – an external drive enclosure that takes multiple 3.5″ drives?

We’ve all seen the external drive cases that take a 3.5″ drive and present it as a USB, eSATA or firewire device. I’m looking for the same sort of thing, but I want the case to take multiple drives (and preferably more than two). I don’t want any smarts in the box – it doesn’t have to be a NAS, or do RAID, or try to do anything other than take multiple hard disks and […]

USB forwarding from dom0 to domU

What are my options to forward two USB connected phones to xen guest? I’ve read about PCI-passthrough http://www.wlug.org.nz/XenPciPassthrough, but I’m sure usb controller in the server isn’t a pci card. There’s device level forwarding, but I need to forward two devices, this here doesn’t say how to do it: http://www.olivetalks.com/2008/02/03/usb-forwarding-on-xen-it-just-does-not-work/ Would something as simple as: usbdevice = [ ‘host:xxx’, ‘host:yyy’, ] work? EDIT: I’m now starting a bounty. This is really important for me and […]

How can I convert a USB printer to LPT?

I have an Java enterprise app that only prints to LPT1. The problem is, the only printers available in my company are USB printers. The developers and support staff (InfoSys) for the app all say they require a DOS based printer which I took to mean LPT because USB has a BIOS setting to enable legacy support which I enabled. I have tested connecting an LPT printer to the PC, and the app works and […]

Enable/disable USB devices on Windows using Active Directory on certain users

I have been asked to disable access to USB devices on Windows machines for information disclosure reasons. Although this can be done with Active Directory, the problem is that the solution should let us enable access for certain users for limited authorised periods. How can this be done with Active Directory (if it’s possible)? If not, which software can I use to do it? You’re talking about a setting that gets applied to computers, not […]

Does the VMWare Server 2.0 BIOS support USB?

I have a VMWare Server 2.0 installation. I have a USB hard drive plugged into the host and the USB device attached to a VM. I would like to be able to boot from one of the partitions on my USB drive. Is this possible? From the bit of poking around I’ve done it looks like the BIOS doesn’t support USB drives? you would had better results searching for it on Google… here it is: […]

USB drive changes name from /dev/sdb to /dev/sdc (and back again) when copying?

I have a usb drive mounted to a folder in an Ubuntu 9.04 server installation. The mount options are stored in /etc/fstab for easy mounting/dismounting: # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> /dev/sdb1 /media/backup ntfs nouser, auto, sync 0 3 (I’ve since changed the portion to a UUID to see if it would help with the problem). A backup has been copying files to the disk every morning without issue. Just now I tried to […]

What infomation can be had about a USB device that I don’t have drivers for?

I have a USB device (USB to RS-232) that works on some computers without drivers but not on others. This is a problem because I don’t have the drivers disk for it nor any info on who made it. Are there any tools that will tell me what kind of device it is or whatever info windows (and other OS’s) pulls in when it’s trying to set it up? Its not a general solution, but […]
