VLAN on multiple switches?

We have a small network with two managed switches and two unmanaged (basic netgear 10/100) switches. I would like to get to grips with VLAN’s after creating another subnet. Currently we only have one subnet 192.168.1.0/24. I am planning on adding a test subnet of 192.168.5.0/24 and then adding that subnet to a new VLAN. I was wondering, before I begin reading up on VLANs and how to configure them in the simplest form, if […]

Trunk only one VLAN to an attached switch.

I have a netgear GSM7324 and a managed Cisco switch. I need to connect the Cisco switch to the netgear. The Cisco switch will only need to have vlan 3 on it. Do I still need to set up a trunk port to connect the Cisco and Netgear or would it just set it for switch port mode access and switch access vlan 3 ? I’d create the vlan on both sides and use a […]

Assiging VLAN based on MAC under linux

Is it possible to assign VLANs on Linux based on the MAC address of the client? If so, how? The vconfig man pages seem to indicate it only operates on a port-basis. I’m trying to achieve a wireless setup where new clients are assigned to a ‘unapproved’ vlan which they will stay in until an administrator has approved them (or perhaps until they’ve registered on a local captive portal) at which point I wish to […]

CISCO : vtp server and client

I was doing some cisco exercises on configuring a vtp server and client, something I can’t figure out is : I setup a vtp server, added my VLAN’s I then took another switch that was attached to this vtp server and set it to client Now my VTP client didn’t get the vlans configured on the vtp server, however when I added another vlan on my server, suddenly they were all there Is there a […]

Unable to ping Cisco 3750 Switch from non-directly connected device

I have a Cisco 3750 configured baiscally as a hub. All ports are configured as access ports on the same vlan 10. VLAN interface 10 was given an IP Address of 10.10.10.1, in order to connect to the switch. I can ping the device from a directly connected router 10.10.10.99, but unable to ping the device from a different subnet 1.1.1.1. This switch is used to connect to other devices in the site on the […]

How to share multicast traffic to many vlans

I have linux computer , this computer connected with entire my network via zyxel gs-2200. In this zyxel also connected router with 500 vlans, one by client. On linux computer i have vlc program that stream multicast ip-tv. In the same vlan where is my linux box, i can see the tv. Question is, how to reshare this multicast stream to all vlans? Wifi hosts can’t contact one another (but wired hosts on the same vlan can)

Our current network is vlan’d, and the wifi network is on its own separate vlan (130). To connect to the 130 vlan, you connect to the access point (a HP MSM310), which is connected to an HP Procurve 2510-48G switch. In order to do some testing, a developer requires a box on the 130 subnet, that can be accessed by wireless hosts. The issue is that clients connected directly to the switch on a port […]

Vlan Management Policy Server ( VMPS) Configuration and Management

I am trying to design a topology in which I need to use VMPS and unfortunately the resources are rather few on the internet. Based on this Configuration document VMPS I have created a sample configuration document. However I see in it a particular command, viz download vmps Which I believe creates a copy of the VMPS database from the TFTP server to the NVRAM. Now my question is: Are any of my assumptions above […]

Filtering traffic into a Vlan in a Switched Network

I am designing a topology with one Core Switch and around 6 Edge Switches with around 10 Vlans managed through the VTP Server running on Core Switch. Inter Vlan routing is also enabled on the core switch. Now I need to restrict traffic into one particular Vlan. I know how to write the statements using Extended Access List and apply it on an interface in a Router, but how do I create an Access List […]

SIP ( Asterisk ) CoS solutions with no VLAN’s?

I have a Asterisk box actually two running pure asterisk. No GUI i.e. FreePBX, TL etc. The asterisk box is connected to a an EX4200 VC Stack, the EX4200′s then connect to our headquarters via a Qwest Metro Optical Ethernet line or QMOE. All it is for those not familiar with it is a very expensive site 2 site VPN. It terminates to our EX2200 PoE’s switches in HQ. Now the problem is that QMOE […]
