Pointing a domain name to a VPS

I just got a VPS. All the host gave me was an IP address to have the domain point to. Lets say my domain is mydomain.com So what I did was I removed the nameserver (not the NS records, but the actual nameserver) values. Then I added 3 A records to point to the VPS IP for the following: ns1.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com mydomain.com The host kept telling me I had to set up ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. [...]

Automated email reports

I have a VPS with a high loaded website. Are there any automated solutions to send me an email or SMS if my site is not working correctly (for example, web server does not respond or DDoS)? Asked by romvlads I really like pingdom. They will externally monitor services or even look for a specific string which is returned by a web server etc. http://pingdom.com/ You get one free probe without SMS messaging. You just [...]

nameserver problems with webmin/virtualmin [closed]

Possible Duplicate: nameserver problems with webmin/virtualmin I’m setting up a shiny new vps with my own nameserver. Fortunately I had a spare domain that I’m using and have registered as a nameserver. After a struggle, I seem to have it working but when I check two test sites with intoDNS, one appears to work and the other doesn’t. With dig, neither work. The setup for the two is identical other than one being hosted with [...]

How to verify promised uptime before hiring a server?

I’ve been bitten by this too many times. You find a well known hosting provider, read comparative reviews (and pass by on any company that has influence in those review), they promise 99.99% uptime, you pay a reasonable price (not the cheapest) and after you bought the server or VPS, they end up delivering less than 95% uptime. I’m not naming any names, but these are some well-known companies. How can you independantly verify the [...]

Which level of data protection should I expect for a Linode personal server without backup service?

all: I bought a personal linode server without the backup service. All the data on it is totally personal and not that important. But for sure, I still don’t want them to be lost. I want to know, without the backup service, which level of data protection should I expect? Do they have in-place RAID or some other replication facilities for my data? How do you think, without the backup service, the probability of a [...]

OpenVPN Continually Reauthorizes

I have been running OpenVPN on a small VPS for my family for the past several months, and have been happy with it. Last week my host rebooted the box and now I’m having issues. They turned TUN back on, which in the past has gotten me back in operation. I can connect to the VPN, but when I try to access the web through it the connection gets stuck in a continual loop of [...]

Clear / Flush cached memory

I have a small VPS with 6GB RAM hosting a couple of websites. How to remotely install SSH on Linux?

It seems that my VPS doesn’t have SSH installed(I’m not sure yet), because I get no response from the server, and I cant ping it. So I think this is weird, because I cant control my VPS by anyway. When I try to connect i get connection timeout, and no route to host. I’m running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. The way I’m trying to connect is ssh user@ipv4address. Hope this helps. So , I wanted to know: [...]
