Intraforest user account merge with Active Directory

I have a scenario where there is a root domain (RD) and two child domains (CD1 and CD2). Users have accounts on both CD1 and CD2, with identical samAccountNames, names etc, and various applications either use the CD1 or CD2 account for authentication to resources. I need to collapse CD2 into CD1, so I want to merge the accounts together. However ADMT does not allow me this option (merge options are greyed out), I think […]

Cloud hosting for windows domain controller, possible?

We currently host our own domain controller (small company) locally on dedicated h/w. However to mitigate disaster we’re considering the use of virtualisation and cloud hosting. One thought is Virtual primary domain controller hosted in the cloud + a local (secondary) virtualised server running in the office as a cache? Is this possible or should I consider something else? We’re happy to pay for the decent hosting and DR but this is really out of […]

Kinit Won’t Connect to a Domain Server : Realm not local to KDC while getting initial credentials

I am setting up a testbed environment where Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) clients will authenticate to a Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Server. I am following the official Ubuntu guide to set up a Kerberos client here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba/Kerberos, but I have encountered a problem when running the kinit command to connect to the domain server. The command I am running is: kinit Administrator@DS.DOMAIN.COM. This command returns the following error: Realm not local to KDC while getting […]

Can not connect to Windows network share from non domain computer via VPN

I have two separate Windows Domains in different LANs. Between both I have established a site-to-site VPN. Red is a Windows 2003 Domain Controller of Domain Dom_a. When do local GPOs apply if a computer is a part of a domain?

when do local GPOs apply if a computer is a part of a domain? What would be an example scenario when local GPOs would be relevant for a computer that is a part of a domain? Can I somehow ‘use’ local GPOs even if the computer is a part of the domain? I ask because I want to understand the difference between local GPOs and domain GPOs and how they differ / how they are […]

Batch file to MASS ping group of computers on network by name, check reply, and resolve hostname

So, I have a list of 5000 computers on my Windows Active Directory network that may or may not still exist (I know, don’t ask…I need to know for a project, and of course little help from the network people, and so many errors in the data they give me) The computer names fall within SAT1 to SAT5000. However, some of them may have been upgraded to a new OS and renamed. so in this […]

Cannot join Win7 workstations to Win2k8 domain

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 Ultimate machine to a Windows 2k8 domain and it’s not working. I get this error: Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network’s administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:Windowsdebugdcdiag.txt. DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain “example.local”: […]

New Active Directory domain for small Dev shop, moving users data to domain account

We have decided that it is time to build a domain in our smallish office, and i have been tasked with the job. The Domain is setup, and we are in the process of creating usernames and passwords for users. Since the users all have existing machines (mostly laptops) and have been using them for some time now, when they join the domain, their settings are going to go “missing” for them… they wont be […]

Slow “applying computer settings” on workstation when I simulate domain controller being turned off that holds the FSMO roles in a two DC domain

Slight problem testing fail-over procedure with my two domain controllers. I have two domain controllers, dc1 and dc2. dc1 has all FSMO roles, is Active Directory integrated DNS dc2 is Active Directory integrated DNS and is the DHCP server. The DHCP scope assigns dns1 to dc1 and dns2 to dc2 for clients. Both dc1 and dc2 are global catalog (GC) The problem happens when I turn off dc1 to simulate the PDC FSMO role not […]
