On most of my VM’s the CPU is setup as ACPI Uniprocessor (see below). Some of my VM’s are setup as MPS Uniprocessor. I need to change it to ACPI, so I can upgrade to Server 2008. How to I change it? This isn’t a VMWare ESX issue at all, this is purely down to Windows and your current hardware platform and the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) chosen during the initial install of Windows. With [...]

new here, greetings and such. My problem is relatively simple, but the situation is a tad odd. Currently, I have just been hired on to improve (essentially fix) a server room for a health care dispatcher. However, their server room is in shambles. Everything works, but it’s a matter of I don’t know what is going to break first. They have just recovered from a 10-day data loss from their SQL server (the main server [...]

I am going to enforce a new password policy on our domain. The main issue I have is should I wait for the max time to pass for the user to change his current password, or to enforce the: change at next logon? I have many users, and to go one by one setting the change can take half a day. but to wait for the max time, can take 91 days (as set). I [...]

We are currently in the process of upgrading our 32bit production server to a more powerful 64bit server whilst upgrading to ASP.NET 4. However, upon doing some light load testing we seem to be having a performance decrease! I have created a simple load test with a constant load of 20 users performing a few simple use cases and compared the results: As you can see, the highest performing config is the existing 32 bit [...]

Our company is a web development company that host several websites for various clients. We are a smaller company, in fact approximately 10 employees. All employees are on a network and have associated emails through a windows 2003 exchange server. Recently, one of our employers promised a client that we would be able to host their email on our exchange server. Not my idea of a fun project. I have no other means of hosting [...]

I’m trying to install x64 printer drivers on a Windows 2003 R2 Standard x86 print server. I downloaded the amd64 folder locally to the server. When I try to install the x64 bit print driver it asks for NTPrint.inf and it auto points to my cd drive E:amd64. I hit Browse and browse to the location I extracted my amd64 folder to and find NTPrint.inf. I hit Ok to accept and then it says I [...]

At my work we are using sharepoint for an intranet (acessed internally) so if you go to http://intranet you will be redirected to the intranet site. I want to create other sites that make use active directory but can only be accessed internaly. i.e. if I create a site, how can i set it up such that if anyone internally types http://myinternalsite then they can view a site that can only be accessed by employees [...]

I have 2 systems running MSWindows Server 2003 and 2008 respectively. I have done all the updates. I am interested in securing them e.g. close all unneeded services. For example my concern is that if I start shuting down services that I consider as uneedded perhaps a needed service is depended on them and will have problems. Is there a tool that helps on this? E.g. that gives a report and shuts everything down taking [...]

Our SQL queries sometimes take too long. We have a Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2005 setup. We have already created indexes everywhere that’s possible. Can we get quicker disks? Any ideas from anyone? The current line of thinking (as of July 2011) is that the best performance on EC2 is by RAIDing the ephemeral disks (the larger your instance, the more there are of them). You had better be sure you have backups if you [...]
