Windows 2008R2 SNMP service not binding to all IP addresses

I’m having trouble with the Microsoft SNMP agent on Windows 2008R2 not listening on all IP addresses on a number of servers. When I do netstat -ano I can see that it’s apparently listening on all IP’s: UDP 0.0.0.0:161 *:* 996 However in practice it only seems to be listening on one IP address on each server. What I can’t work out is the selection criteria. I’d actually far rather it just listen on one [...]

Best/Secure Windows 2008 Server transfer protocol

I hate FTP because it is not secure, passwords are cleartext, etc. I want something safe for my windows server and I used to use sftp on linux for a while but now I turned to windows solution so I’m a bit of a newbie about it. I’d like to know, what’s the best and or most secure solution for transering file to my server? I’ll be the only one transfering files to it so [...]

Is it possible to install VMware on a Virtual Private Server?

I recently purchase a VPS hosting package, which allows me to have full root access to Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. I can access the VPS with Remote Desktop and install any application I like. I tried to install VMware Workstation and or VMware Player. The installation failed with with little explaintion as to why. I understand what I am trying to do is put virtual environment on top of already virtualised environment, so was [...]

Windows Server 2008 R2 software Raid-5 slow over network

I’m using Windows Server 2008 R2 for my file server. I put a 7x1TB software raid-5 on it, and let it resynch. OS is installed on a separate disk. Now I’m getting very poor write speeds to the raid volume over network. If I copy files to the Raid volume over the network, write speed is poor (~5MB/s). If I copy files to the OS disk over the network, write speed is good (~70MB/s). If [...]

Problem with network policy rule in Network Policy Server

Trying to configure RADIUS for a college network, and have run into the following frustration: I can’t set an “AND” condition for group membership of authenticated objects in the network policy rules, e.g. I’m trying to create a NPS rule that says, essentially “IF user is a member of [list of user groups] And is authenticating from a computer in [wireless computer group] then allow access. The screenshot above is the rule I am having [...]

Recommended settings and setup for Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Services

What are the recommended settings for a terminal server? I have a group of up to 300 persons (they are working shifts, so I guess 100-120 on at same time is unthinkable) who is going to access a terminal server. The services given on the terminal services server is Internet and Outlook. They will also have access to shared network spaces like their own homespace, shared spaces and some printers. I was planning to install the [...]

How can I view Server 2008 Software RAID 5 Resync Progress?

Skipping over the pros/cons of RAID 5, I have a software RAID-5 array made from 3x 2TB disks. I started the sync and nearly 12 hours later the sync is still going. Is there any way that I can view the progress of the sync? Most screenshots I’ve seen of a RAID setup shows “Resyncing [x]%” but not on mine. F5 in disk manager does nothing. Going to More Tasks > Refresh also shows nothing. [...]

Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) with a raw Windows 2008R2 ISO

I am new to WAIK, and am trying to figure out how to build a WIM image from the Windows 2008 R2 ISO media. So far I have been unsuccessful in finding this information. Is this possible, and if so, what am I missing from the TechNet documentation? The WAIK documentation has a step by step document of how to image a system. By default this is at C:Program FilesWindows AIKDocsWhitepapersstepbystep_itpro.htm depending on what you [...]

With Windows Server 2008, when do I need 32-bit and when do I need 64-bit?

I am getting a Windows server with the option for Windows Server 2008 32-bit and Windows Server 2008 64-bit. I will only be running IIS7 and SQL Server 2008 Express. Which should I use and what are the indications? If you need to run 64-bit applications such as Exchange Server, you need 64-bit. If you have more than 4 GB of memory, or plan to have them in the future, you need 64 bit. Also, [...]

Windows Update checking/downloading new updates hangs Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise with TMG installed

We have weird situation with Windows 2008R2 and TMG 2010 installed. It happened two times already on 2nd Tuesday of the month that Windows dropped all connections (VPNs, routing etc) and when trying to log in remotely / locally to it you could only see welcome screen and it never logs you in (I have even waited 30 minutes). Only hard reset is an option then (it’s a virtual machine running on Hyper-V R2). We [...]
