Is A Network Copy Timeout Likely To Show Up In Event Viewer Logs?

I am trying to copy a 1.2Gb file between a Windows 7 workstation and a Windows Server 2003 system. That same server also hosts our enterprise’s shares, most of them anyway. The copy from the workstation to the server times out. If not in the event logs, where might this timeout event be recorded? Furthermore, what tools exist, other than doing something like running Wireshark, that would let me see the details of the failure? […]

What’s blocking my program from sending email?

I have a Java program which uses javax.mail to send an SMTP message. This program WORKS FINE on a Linux box, I want to emphasize that beforehand. When I try this same code on my Windows 7 x64 box, I get this error: send failed, exception: javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not connect to SMTP host: smtp.west.cox.net, port: 25; nested exception is: java.net.SocketException: Network is unreachable: connect Here is the code: Session session = Session.getInstance(props, null); MimeMessage msg […]

Mass SNMP updates?

Is there an easy way to update over 1000 Windows hosts with an additional permitted manager? I have tools to remotely run scripts on hosts, but it is a little bit difficult to filter out specific hosts, and you end up having to type each hostname into the program then add it to a list of hosts to run the script on. I have scripts that will update permitted managers, and other SNMP settings in […]

In a multi-domain forest, what EXACTLY happens when some, but not all, of the Infrastructure Masters are on Global Catalogs?

There are plenty of TechNet articles, like this one that say that phantom object don’t get updated if an Infrastructure Master is also a Global Catalog, but other than that there isn’t a lot of in depth information on what actually happens in this configuration. Imagine a configuration like this: |————–| | example.com | | | | dedicated IM | |————–| | | | |——————-| | child.example.com | | | | IM on a GC […]

How to set multiple subdomains in the host file (DNS)?

I have a lot of subdomains in the main domain xxx.zzz So, for this domain, I can have aaa.xxx.zzz bbb.xxx.zzz ccc.xxx.zzz ddd.xxx.zzz eee.xxx.zzz….ETC…. Istead of adding each subdomain in the host file, I would like to add only the main domain xxx.zzz and then to be able to access all the subdomains. I have tryed with *.xxx.zzz but apparently, this will not work (Linux or Windows). Any idea is welcome. Thank you very much. Asked […]

Minimal Windows 2008 or 2012 memory usage

What are the minimal memory usage for Windows 2008 & 2012 server editions? I’m referring to all things OS-related. The machine would be a VM with a dedicated web server software, that wouldn’t rely on the OS (ie. no IIS, no domains, minimal local database) and wouldn’t use much memory (less than 50 MB), though CPU usage might occasionnally spike under load. I’m asking because there are options for hosting where you’re charged by the […]

It took me several […]

Is it possible to prevent a node’s primary DNS suffix from changing when it joins an active directory domain?

I have a Win2K8 node with dns suffix vm100.eng.mycompany.com. And I want to join it to an AD domain (which uses a different DNS suffix. ad.mycompany.com) but I don’t want the node’s primary dns suffix to change, and therefore change its FQDN to vm100.ad.mycompany.com. Is this possible? EDIT Reword and removed the background info and alternate solution since it was confusing people. Asked by Michael Closson As others have said, it is not clear what […]

Best practice for setting up SQL server on a Virtual Machine [closed]

This is my first attempt at virtualizing SQL server on VMWare and I want to make sure I am doing things correctly. Should I have SQL server installed on the C: drive / same partition as the OS, Then add a virtual disk for the Data files, say 300GB, and then another virtual disk for the log files say 100GB? Or should I add 2 300GB vdisks, for the data files mirror them in the […]

Active Directory: Viewing “Attribute Editor” after finding an account via ADUC’s “Find” option

When I activate the Advanced features (View -> Advanced Features) and open a user’s properties by navigating to their OU and right clicking the user object, I see the Attribute Editor tab. However, if I search for a user (right click the domain -> Find -> search for the user), and double click on the user, I do not see the tab. I cannot normally navigate to users because some OUs have too many users. […]
