Securing Guest Wireless Network

I need to setup a guest wireless network at the office for visitors to connect to. What are your recommendations in terms of how to secure it without putting too much of a support burden on myself? I’d prefer to keep it an open access point, so I don’t have to support users who can’t figure out how to input the password correctly. However, if I don’t, should I use WPA or WPA2? Will I [...]

Network adapter state [Wireless]

What does a wireless network adapter “disassociated state” mean? Please help. I cannot seem to find an explanation anywhere. T It means that even though you can see a Wireless network SSID being broadcast on the client interface’s spectrum/wireless range, you are not talking to it directly. Once you associate (meaning: choose to talk to this network), then the next step would be to authenticate if there is the need to do that via security [...]

Ad Hoc Wireless Network Between Vista IIS and Leopard

I am trying to set up an Ad Hoc network between my PC running Vista and my Macbook running Leopard. It’s not just the Ad Hoc network though. I have Visual Studio Developer Express and SQL Studio Express running on the PC. When I launch a web service on localhost from Visual Studio, I want the Mac to be able to access the web service on my pc (localhost). I am accessing the web service [...]

Configuring two wireless routers: one with internet access and one without

I look after the network for a small educational establishment, and we wish to make wireless internet access available for teaching staff but not for students. We do, however, want to allow the students wireless access to our internal network so that they can download lecture notes, etc. I have two wireless routers (both Netgear routers – a WGR614v9 and a WPN824) set up with different wireless keys: the students have the key for the [...]

Wireless XP users don’t get their home folder mapped

We’re using Windows XP and Active Directory, we have a number of laptops that have a excellent connection to the wireless network, the logon script runs and maps the required drives etc, all appears fine apart from the Home Folder isn’t mapped, we rely on the home folder mapping to be done by AD when the user logs on we don’t map this with the logon script. The problem is the home folder doesn’t get [...]

Auth wireless access though an http server

I’m the admin of a wireless network … but as most people aint expert there seem to be a general problem connecting to it … as we are using WPA Enterprise, so on windows platforms there are some common steps that have to be used to get it to work. But users are stupid. Many places they have some kind of opennet, where you are just able to connect … but when trying to access [...]

What is the fastest way to connect two separate networks within two separate buildings?

We have two buildings that are across the street from each other. Each has their own separate network. We needed to connect them together using a fast connection because of the large number of files that are copied between the networks on a daily basis. We have a wireless bridge setup right now between the buildings that gives us about 20Mbps (it’s two Aironet 1240AG in root/non-root configuration). Unfortunately there’s a lot of RF interference [...]

LAN Between Buildings

Right now I have two buildings across the street from one another that both have typical consumer aDSL connections (something like 12 Mbs down/1 Mbs up). When I need to access resources on the other network, I VPN into the other building and do my work. The problem is that when I’m transferring large files, it’s a very slow connection. And sometimes I’m remotely working with both of those networks so simply walking between buildings [...]

2wire router – every 600 seconds latency jumps up for 110 seconds

Exactly every 600 seconds (10 minutes) my 2wire 2701HG-B has latency go from around 15ms to between 400ms and 800ms. This lasts for between 108 seconds and 113 seconds averaging 110 seconds. This is true for both wired and wireless. I’ve tried it on multiple computers and it is still the same issue. I disabled all wireless encryption and it didn’t help. I restored factory settings, put back the bare minimum, and it doesn’t help. [...]
